Well I stumble upon a very nice Colt Detective Special wearing a Nickel finish, the gun shows no signs of being refinished, and it shows no signs of wear. This gun has not been shot a lot as far as I can tell! The Serial number is "F577XX" as best as I can tell it is a 1974 year model.

The person I got it from said it was their night stand gun and that they never shot it.

It came with a nice leather case, speed loader, 50 rounds of Federal Premium 147 gr Hydra-Shok +P+ rounds, 20 rounds of Federal Premium low recoil 110 gr Hydra-Shok, 50 rounds of Aguila 158 gr JHP range rounds, 50 rounds of Magtech 158gr JHP range rounds, 50 rounds of 125 gr JHP Georgia Arms range rounds.

I think I got a pretty good deal, I traded straight up my Sig 1911 Traditional Compact with 2 magazines. What do you think? I am pretty happy with the deal I got!

I cant wait to go shoot it, after the range I believe this will remain as my night stand gun and will continue to see very little use.

I looked for a DS a few months back, was seeing rough samples for about $350 and cherry ones for nearly $800. Finally settled on one in-between for $500. My usual carry is a Glock 19 or 23 but I do carry the DS and at its size and weight you hardly know it's there.

Heck, the ammo you got is probably worth $150 on today's market.

I'm not into guns to make money, but rather to have what I want. When it comes to buying or trading guns, I figure if you are happy with what you got, you made a good deal.

I agree with you wgp, I'm not into guns to make money either. I feel pretty fortunate to come across this one.

blkbrd666....It was a sweet deal, good thing I have several other 1911's in my collection. I hated to part with my Sig 1911 but I think this one was worth the trade.

Careful of the +P+

I picked up a 2nd generation Colt DS last Summer and love it. I found a pair of stag grips for it at a gun show for $20 the week after I got the gun. Should have bought a lottery ticket that week.

But, FWIW, I did a lot of research on what they can shoot safely and the consensus from the Colt forums I visited is that they can shoot +P, but a steady diet is not recommended.

Mine shoots better than I do. Enjoy it.

Very nice nickel Detective Special. I picked up my very first Detective Special last year. It is one of the Colts that I just never had an interest owning until the concealed carry thing took off.

I love my blue steel 1968 DS, but my dad has a nickel Cobra and that classic Colt nickel finish is SEXY.

I was just about to start my own thread about a 1961 DS blued that I found in my LGS. I hope you don't mind if I piggyback your post.
It's a blued gun with some holster wear and slight pitting, fine bore, tight tight lock up, wood grips in decent shape for the edge. Asking $345. Being that I'm not familiar with these, what else should I look for on these specific models?
Thanks!

I carried an early 70's version off-duty for some years. That era DS was a thing of beauty. I've kicked myself for decades that I sold it to a fellow deputy when I left. If I could find a nice example of one at a fair price I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. Probably make it my main carry again.

Collector: Unless the pitting and bluing wear is extreme, $345 is a good price. I'd buy!

I have the same gun, grips and all

Picked up cheap on on-line auction as bidders were not watching. Mine looks the same but with some pitting to the nickel on the side plate. My guess it was cleaning with hoppes 9 and not wipped off. I own probably 8 Colt D frame snubbies and this one shoots the best.
