My son is currently deployed and has been asking me to let him know when the AR market gets real again so he can have me get him one.
Well, from what i'm seeing that is currently happening ?
He just messaged me and was asking about the Sig 716.
I'm all about an AR platform being .30. ( The .22 never made a bit of sense to me but that's not the issue here )
Anywho, does anyone here have any experienced input, pros/cons on the Sig 716 that they could share with me ?

EDIT:
I didn't have all the info earlier. Turns out this a commemorative rifle made by Sig Saur specifically for his Company With engraving to state so and offered in limited production for them only.

Features: 7.62x51mm, Short Stroke Pushrod Rotating Bolt, Overall Length 37.4”, Barrel Length 16”, Four position Gas Regulator, Magpul Retractable Stock/Grip, Quad Rail Forend, Flip Up Iron Sights, Free-floating Military Grade Chrome Lined Barrel.

I'm sure you'll get some more concrete feedback than this but I've got a few friends that have them and like them a lot. POF makes a nice one too.

Shot the 223 version it was fine and plenty accurate.
I like the mp-10 and bushmaster Moe. Armalite too maybe above the bushy.

Thanx Ryanxia.

Nothing particular btg. Other than he doesn't yet have one. He wants a quality rifle and this one commemorates his time served in the sandbox with his particular battalion/company and operation.

Thanx dvdcrr. Would you care to elaborate ? I'm not familiar with what you are saying. As I said, i'm new to the AR world and I read so many variations and so many different Manufacturer add ons I don't know what is what.

The 716 is a very fine rifle. It was designed by one of the many designers of the Hk 416/417 series. They are very similar. The 716 is supposed to be an improvement (magwell and other things). If that is what he wants, that is what I would get him. You would be hard pressed to find a better rifle. The 516/716 and the 416/417 are top tier rifles. Like I said, I wouldn't hesitate buying on at all, especially if that is what he wants. Always buy exactly what you want. If this is the rifle he wants, accept no substitution. Trust me I went through this. I wanted the 416. When I finally got it, no other rifle would have made me as happy just because it is the exact rifle I wanted.

Pros: very reliable piston gun built from the ground up be so
Accurate
It' a Sig
Will function under lots of adverse conditions
Cons: Heavy
Parts are only available from Sig

I agree 100% (bold text added for emphasis). It sounds like he really wants this commemorative rifle for his unit and will be sorry if he lets it slip through his fingers. There are some things you just have to own!

Thanx all for your input.
I got a chance to Skype with my son today and he stated that the order will definitely be placed.( just as soon as Adobe stops actin up on his lap top )
He's 48 days short now but i'm sure this is gonna make it feel like 48 months lol.
According to Sig, production is expected to take 180 days. So he's got at least a 6 month wait from now.
I think I may have a source of Military .308 brass so if that comes thru I can start loading it for him. And or buy all the .308 ammo I can find twixt now and then.
I'll start researching quality optics for him too.Any suggestions on paralax free red dot types ?

You are absolutely correct Quentin. He'd regret it HUGE !!

I'd tell him to do it. I didn't get into guns until after my deployment so I passed on an engraved 1911 with my battalion crest, motto, and deployment year on it. I don't remember what brand but I thought for $700 it's not worth it. I still wish to this day that I had ordered it. It would have been something I was extremely proud of and could pass down some day.

Jim

The market is real, for now. I lost a bottle of cognac on a bet that it wouldn't drop below $900 apiece factory new. It did below $700. It is Buyer's Market. How much longer is another question. Probably until another evil outcast goes on his last shooting spree.

If I were in your shoes, I'd go shopping over the counter. Shoulder them, dry fire, look at the fits and finishes, factory options. There are many things you won't know from the most detailed honest advertising until you get your hands on her (the rifle)

Carpe diem. In any state the market is coiled to jump at the slightest provocation.

Hi YZ,
Thanx for the info. Thru some reading of posts on this site and others I have seen that it is indeed becoming a buyers market for now. I see that some Gun stores are becoming quite stocked up almost to the point of over stocking. So, I spose the prices have no where to go but down. I have another son in law enforcement so this may be a good opportunity for me to get something in .308 for him.
However...
The rifle that was in question is not an over the counter item. My son decided yesterday that he was going to order one.

Godspeed then. I did order my last after handling one at the store. An Anderson if you care to know. A small manufacturer in KY whose AR's are no-lube. Mine does run bone dry, not a hiccup, and cleaner for that than a piston driven 516.

The SIG 516 I owned and trained with was a fine rifle. The 716 should not be any different, except the caliber and all that comes with it, such as the recoil. The piston addition and the obligatory (non-removable) alloy foregrip makes this particular AR a little nose heavy. The main advantage of its operating system is the 4-positional piston valve. Closing the valve makes the rifle a manual repeater, very quiet with a can on, and none of the blowback in your face typical for a suppressed direct impingement AR.

When you get the 716 in with commemorative engraving, you will have to post photos of it. Trust me he will love it. Like I said and Quentin agreed, since it is the rifle he wants, there is no substitute. You guys will have to let me know how it performs.

Thanx Guys.
Albeit, it will be 6 months or more, it will most certainly get posted up asap after he gets it and comes home.
It's being delivered from Sig to a dealer near Ft Bliss in about 180+ days. Then i'll have to wait until he gets leave to come home with it. The wait will be much longer for me than him.
I sincerely appreciate all of your responses, correspondences and help.
Most importantly, your services.
THANK YOU GENTELMEN.
