I recently bought a HiPoint C9-9mm handgun. Plus Im new to the board and I have been spending the last couple of hours viewing the post from other people saying how hipoint has cheap guns, but then I have seen some that have said that the find their hi point gun very reliable. I am just asking for a few opinions to see if you guys feel the same. Plus Im in atlanta,ga so I want to know where I can find some good NRA Handgun personal defense classes at?

Welcome Adam - :)

Well as you have found there is (and always will be) a huge diversity of opinion on the Hi-Point.!! I will not add too much that in either way except to say that it would not be too high on my list of choices. As a starting gun and for range use - familiarization with shooting etc - not too bad but for carry then perhaps not always the ideal choice. Can't knock the price tho! :)

Hope you'll get some info re courses in your area - very good way to go.

Welcome to the board Adam.

You'll find that gun brands are a somewhat religious argument for some menbers here. Most of what I've seen about hipoint (never shot one before) is that they seem to be stone cold reliable, and pretty accurate. Hard to find fault with a reliable and accurate pistol ... yes?

Have you tried your local gun range for a begining pistol (AND safety) course? Often, the indoor ranges have classrooms too.

Enjoy.

Welcome to THR.:)

Do not worry about your choice of weaponry now. It mattes not.

Have a gun and learn to safely operate it. Learn the Four Rules until they wake you up at night from continual repitition.

You are doing the right thing by seeking training. Allow your software to select your hardward.

If you are new, your gun opinions will shift. With education and experience, they could be considerably different than what you have now. Find a gun you like, then buy another just like it.

BTW, if you have not done so, buy a box for your holsters.:D

Or do what I did.

Go to the Salvation army and buy an old dresser for the job.

Welcome aboard! The Highpoint satisfies rule number one in a gunfight, "have a gun". It works and has been reported to be pretty reliable, so have fun and shoot. As time goes by you will likely find other guns that may suit you and your needs better and like some of us it may become a passion to you and one of everything may not be enough. :) If your local range has rentals, give them a try and see what works for you and what does not. The folks on this board are some of the best around, but we all have different opinions, needs and biases so form your own opinions and take what others say with a grain of salt and good attitude and your shooting life will be enjoyable.

You are to be commended for seeking out training as it will serve you well. good luck in your search.

For training, go to www.nra.org. They have a list of training classes by state. Be aware though that not every NRA Instructor lists their classes on the main NRA website though (I usually don't myself, for instance). You'll also want to ask around at local gunshops. The classes you'll want to look for are Basic Pistol (take that first) and than Personal Protection in the Home.

Also, Google is your friend. Do a search for "firearms instructors" or "Firearms training" etc and your state and city. Many instructors have websites or are listed on state association websites, etc. You may find someone there as well.

As far as the High Point, it may meet your needs now. Try other pistols when you get a chance though and don't be surprised if you decide to upgrade later.

Thank!

:) I appreciate everyone for welcoming me with such open arms. And in the honor of Rule#1. " Have a Gun", I got's that! On another note, I live in atlanta,ga and the closest gun range is near fayetteville if anyone is familiar with that area. I hope that they have some good instructors and that my hi point proves a valuable point. Is it the gun that protects the man or is it the other way around

Is it the gun that protects the man or is it the other way around
haha - an interesting question!

Stage #1 - the man protects the man - with what is between his ears.

Stage #2 - the man protects his gun so it his alone and there if needed.

Stage #3 - the gun finally can protect the man if options #1 and #2 are fullfilled!;)

Well a hipoint is better than no gun at all.
