Check out Cresap Rifle Club just east of Frederick, Maryland (yes it is legal to take guns across the state line as your destination is a rifle range)
But my favorite by far is 340 Defense in West Virginia. I can get to 340 Defense in 45 minutes from my house in Reston. Good folks up there and you can shoot whatever you want, just do it safely. Check them both out on the web.

I've never been, but I believe Joe's Cafe on Church Road in Sterling does an Ed Levine Open Carry thing every Sunday?

Cool, that's only a couple miles from my work. I may hit it up for lunch sometime this week. Then perhaps for breakfast on Sunday.

Say what you want about NOVA, but funny thing is THATS where the NRA chooses to locate its HEADQUARTERS in FAIRFAX, Northern Virginia!

Don't most groups with Federal lobbying wings have HQs around DC?

BTW I was just joking because tomrbka was ribbing those of us from points South of the Beltway...my sister lives and works in NOVA.....she hates the traffic too.

Yeah, its all good.

My wife, son and I sent 12 years in the Va Beach area and now there is an awesome range down there. I never went to it cause we were there years ago, before I got into shooting.

Anyway, another good thing about Clarke Bros, Cresap and 340 Defense is you can shoot there for more than just one hour and it costs you the same, you just use more targets and ammo. I don't really mind driving 3/4 hour or more to West Virginia, or Maryland or Warrenton - I have a one year family membership at 340 Defense. I do try to plan carefully what I bring and always bring more than one firemarm so if one malfunctions I still have something to shoot.

You can get to BlueRidge Arsenal in less than twenty minutes from where I live. I did have one bad experience there. I wanted to rent a couple of Ruger 10/22's but did not know (at that time) where the bolt lock lever was located. Instead of them just showing me, the young man told me I could not rent 10/22 until I learned how to operate it. We rented a Springfield 1911i nstead, but even my son thought that was rude. But we did notice there was a line of people waiting to get in and I know they have club memberships, so maybe they treat their members better.

Sharpshooters in Lorton has a 25 yard indoor range. They were OK, most of the staff are friendly. Just make sure you dont shoot the thing holding the target - they will charge you extra for that! They offer reduced rates for club members.

NRA Range is by far the most professionally run of all the ranges I've been to. If you get there early enough to be one fo the first 15 people in line on a Saturday morning, you have a good chance of shooting soon after they open. Otherwise, you wind up getting your name on their check in sheet and yuo'll most likely wait at least 45 mintes or more likely over an hour beofre you get a booth assignment - might as well go visit their awesome Firearms Museum. IT IS FREE and by the time you are done going through it you should be next up for a booth at the range. Note you are only allowed to shoot slugs if you bring a shotgun. NRA members pay $16.00 hour - its more for non-members.

I do most of my shooting on private land in West Virginia, but I have used the NRA range and a sight in range on one of the WPAs. The NRA range is nice, but can often be busy so you're definitely limited to 1 hour of shooting. The WPA range was long arm only, but I was able to take a few guys there to do some shooting and we were able to take our time and they all learned a lot (plus the price was right, free). These days with the price of ammo already high, I definitely do most of my shooting on the private land because it irks me to have to pay to shoot.

And yes, northern VA traffic is absolutely terrible.

My gun range near Richmond is $175/year menbership fee Use your own ammo, steel cased, reloads...whatever. You can shoot from 9AM to sunset. 15 yard, 25 yard 50 yard and 100 yard range. They have some pretty weird rules, and sometimes enforce rules which were never in writing...but I guess it is better than what I am seeing discussed in this thread.

They used to be on Rhode Island Avenue in Washington, DC.

It turned out it would have cost more to upgrade/restore the building than it was worth so they moved.

Awesome! I appreciate all the info. I'm sure I'll run into some of you guys around...

Any of you guys participate in 2 or 3 gun competitions? I've been thinking about getting into it but have no idea where anything local might be. Anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to NOVA!!

About traffic: What do you mean, traffic?? I go to work every morning without traffic and there is little to none when I go home...and I live in Manassas and work in the Pentagon...oh, I guess I should point out I leave the house at 0200 and work until 1130...

About ranges: I've belonged to several and what people say about Blue Ridge is generally true, the staff is shall we say "less than polite" most of the time. We've had a family membership for two years now and it does allow us to jump the line of non-members to get a lane, but the atmosphere in the range is almost oppressive sometimes...

There is a great gun shop, called, oddly enough, "The Gun Shop" on the corner of Route 29 and Vint Hill Road. The staff there is simply fantastic, they are enthusiastic, polite and very friendly. Also, the store has everything from pistols to longarms to Barrett 50's on the wall...PLENTY of ammo very reasonably priced. They are hoping to open a range soon, so I would keep my ear out for that.

Welcome to the area and enjoy the sport!!
