Our 12 year old Vizsla died on April 1st and we decided we had gone long enough without a dog in the house. I'm not looking forward to all of the training he'll need, but hopefully he'll be pointing at coveys before too long.

Congratulations on your new family member, and sorry about your loss.

Just remember, no matter how much you want to, don't shoot him. It's AMAZING how much destruction a tiny puppy can wreak when you turn around for a few seconds. When he's 2, he'll be somewhat manageable. For now, he's CUTE!:)

This was Gus (Mudbone Augustus McCrae) at 8 weeks:

Finding out how to get onto the kitchen counter:

Now, he's a great hunter, a big-running chukar dog, a loving companion, a fun playmate, and my wife's baby boy, all at the same time, now, at a little over 3 years old. But for a while, we often wanted to kill the little f---er. He's lucky he was so damned cute!:D And so is yours.

Here's Gus' first chukar:

What's your puppy's name?

His name is Lorne. My only stipulation was that it was one syllable since I knew I'd be yelling it a lot, after that I left the naming up to my wife.

2 years seems to be the magic number for Vizslas. I spent yesterday rolling up all of the oriental rugs and shoving our few nice pieces of wooden furniture into the little used guest bedroom so that he won't chew on them. It will be a long few years, but after that they are hard to beat, both as workers and as family pets.

That picture of Gus getting up to counter level is priceless.

Our 18 mo Brittany is Sally.
She plodded along in the last days of bird season two years ago as a tiny pup. Last fall she pointed and retrieved several birds for me. I didn't get to hunt as much as I had hoped. Maybe this fall will be better.
Good luck with your pup....mine is due to have the "terrible two's" this fall.

What a handsome duo!

Also: what were we thinking trying to raise a Vizsla in a condo in the city? Much (much!) easier somewhere with a yard, and where we can let him run big regularly.

We are getting a new pup in a couple weeks, I sold the breeder the female and part of the deal was I get pick of the first litter. The Kennel name is Snake River Retrievers. So his name is Snake River's Pale Rider. I like some of the westerns from Clint Eastwood, and since he is almost white it seemed like a good fit. We will probably just call him Rider.

While Augustus McCrae (from Lonesome Dove) does fit our lanky western dog, after the puppy experience, our next dogs' names might be more along the lines of General Disarray, Wanton Mayhem, Eva Destruction, etc.:D

You can teach yours to hunt.

I taught mine to protect the house.

Unfortunately she is a lover not a fighter so I had to give her a snubby.

My first family dog growing up was a Vizsla. I would have another one too if my yard permitted. All I can say is I am glad they grow out of being a puppy.....after about 10 years. But hey, its not like you dont know what you are getting into.

I really hope this thread has not veered off topic. The doggies are just too cute to not show pictures of.

To cool more red dog hunters.I have 3 Vizsla's. 2 males and one baby girl. I love hunting these dogs! Waterhouse, you have a very beautiful dog there!!!

I'm in CA. One of my males is out of "Konner" CH Renaissance lord of th"dance. Another one of my boys came from the Copperfield line. The girl is out of Reno,NV out of Red diamond line, and the father was a Texas boy A Zenith line dog
