New Walmart policy?

I went in today for a couple of boxes of .22lr, at the register the item scan beeped a message at the cashier and he asked me if it was to be fired from rifle or handgun. I replied rifle and asked why that was important, he didn't know and at the time I didn't feel like pursuing it but now I am wondering why. Any ideas?

This is the first time this has ever been asked to me and I buy ammo from them all the time.

This has happened to me on and off for a couple of decades or more. They won't sell handgun ammo to anyone under 21, so the cash register automatically prompts the teller to ask you that question on .22s since they can be used in both rifles and handguns. Most tellers don't have a clue why and just do as the register asks. Nothing new at all.

Not to be rude, but this is a known issue, and has been discussed many times here in the past. A search will bring up lots of threads explaining it.

When I buy ammo at Walmart that can be used in both handgun and rifle, they ask which I use it for. If you say pistol, they ask to see your permit and see if there's a pistol on there that will shoot the ammo. If there is no pistol on the permit that uses the ammo, they won't sell it to you. It's not a problem, just always tell them it's for a rifle and you have no second looks...that's the way it works in my neck of the woods.

This isn't company policy, this is federal law.

This is the first .22 I have had in 15 years so that is more than likely why I had never been asked. Only had bought .45, .40 and shotgun shells before this.

Where you been ? They have been asking that question for years now....Nothing new, and its not only Walmart , its just about every store I go into...Including Dicks, and Cabela's
