Just picked up a (new to me) used "never been fired" 2005 870 Wingmaster today. I have had my Mossberg 500 for years but this is my first 870. After I pump it, the action is tight but when I pull the trigger there is about 3/8 of an inch of loose back and forth play. I was shooting it and after each shot i noticed i could see part of the shell. Is this part of its design? With my 500 the action is tight all the time so thats what im used to... Also, are there any recoil pads out there that add an extra inch or so to LOP that arent the slip on type? Thanks for any help!

Actually a properly functioning 870 requires a slight forward movement of the forearm to unlock the action before the bolt can be opened. Recoil usually provides that forward movement, and at that point the bolt is unlocked from the barrel extension. The bolt can open easily to the point the back of the bolt encounters resistance from the hammer/hammer spring as it is being re-cocked by the travel of the bolt and slide.

In other words... it's a feature, not a bug.

As to extra thickness recoil pads or spacers, I don't know of any right off hand, but it seems likely they would be available. How long is the current LOP, and how long do you need it to be?

I figured it was a bug or some type of feature to let you know you had an empty in the chamber.. Fred the current length of pull is, if im measuring correctly, 14". Im a bigger sized fella so Id love an extra inch but id hate to permantly modify. Any ideas?
