went to the gun show and bought a century arms M70b1 AK

could scarcely be happier. The fit is great, the finish is reasonably good (I don't want a pristine AK, I want an AK! a few scratches don't bother me; in fact I think it's part of the charm), and above all IT'S AN AK!!!!!

$562.86 with tax, two 30 rd magazines, and featuring a US barrel and the 1.6mm DNS-5 receiver. I'm pleased with the cost overall, as I doubt I could have gotten much cheaper with FFL fees and I'm happy to have had the opportuity to inspect the weapon in the first place. Compared to the WASRs I saw, the price difference is WELL WORTH IT.

That, and ya just don't see that many fixed-stock yugos.

some questions though:

the two steel mags I got are obviously used/surplus which is fine, and one has a couple patches of minor surface rust (I think? not very red and kind of gummy) that scrubbing with hoppes isn't taking care of. should I soak them in something? if so, what parts are NOT soak safe?

as far as cleaning goes, are there any guides you reccomend? I've cleaned my share of pistols, but rifles are new territory to me.... especially rifles with wood.

thanks guys!

as far as cleaning the mags, try a lil laquer thinner or acetone dissasemble them (very easy push the dimple in the bottom of the mag floor plate and slide off towards big end of floor plate be ready for the spring to come flying...... wipe down all mag parts with a very light oil like Remoil as it will dry without attracting dirt and reassemble...

As for cleaning the rifle, as its a Century I'm going to advise ya tear it down for a good soaking to start with as they tend to leave cr@p in every crack and crevice, to remove the wood take out the buttplate screws now use a 13 mm (1/2") socket to remove the bolt the buttstock is now free, to remove the gas tube press and hold the lil botton on the left side of the reciever at the extreme rear while holding it press in the dust cover latch lift off the dust cover and then push in again and lift out the recoil assembly, now pull the bolt fully rearward and up outa the reciever. Look at the right side of the rear sight and locate a small lever rotate it up and lift off gas tube, Now look at lower handgaurd at the front right side next to the barrel ya will see another small lever, rotate it up and work retainer forward now pull forward on wood HG and remove. Now back to the gas tube if ya wish to remove the wood (I wouldn't bother myself) grasp the wood in your right palm and the gas tube in left rotate the wood evenly 180 degrees it will then lift out....

Ya don't need to bother with the FCG at this time as it can occasionally be a pain for those not familiar to re-install........ gettin it outs real easy though ;)

Get a few assorted cleaning brushes and a pan or other container pour in some mineral spirits (if the gun is parked and not painted then I'd just use laquer thinner as its MUCH more effective if so test it on a non visible part of the finish to be sure it hasn't been painted as laquer thinner will strip most paints, if its unharmed then your good) just start brushing it all out particularily the chamber/ front trunion area....... after ya get no more gunk etc.. and ae satisfied reverse of dissasembly and your good to go, if ya got some tung oil or other wood finish now is the time to use it......

Only lightly oil myself I'm a believer in military surplus LSA oil ya can soak every part except the wood pay attention to how the bolt rotates within the bolt carrier I get more e-mails from folks tryin to figure how to re install a bolt in bolt carrier ;)

After its reassembled OR before disassembly hand cycle the bolt a couple hundred times, it will make the first shots fired less problematic if its a lil tight now go have fun

just got one each of the century M70B1 and M70AB2, clssicarms.us has them both in stock for $419 and $429 shipped respectively. Well shipped to south carolina anyway...

The gray finish is a little too thick and adds way too much material to the surface of just about all of the metal, and also killed the night sights in the process. They take a little bit of a brake in, and my m70ab2 came with 1 refinished and 1 rusty yugo bolt hold open mag, the fixed stock one came with two rusty ones. Kind of hints at why they were so heavy on the new finish.

overall my gun is great. tapco trigger too, I noticed while cleaning.

the cam wasn't new, but there were no burrs or scratches or rust on it.

the only rust was on the mags and a LITTLE inside (not particularly worried, just gonna CLP regularly).

disassembly was irritating since CAI only includes WASR manuals, but I figured it out.

overall, I'm happy happy happy.

what cam? they are built from military parts sets the only thing new is the 922R compliance parts and the reciever an d the barrel these started as battle field pickups the Croatians collected up after the Serbs tried to "ethnically cleanse" (P.C term for eradicate, genocide or simply wipe from the face of the earth) them...... ALL of the rifles were used in a very hard fought war, unlike the WASRs which were simply built from the scrap parts of military rifle production the Yugos have a very strong combat history albiet they belonged to the wrong side but I like to think how the $$ from sellin off the Serb/Yugo equipment has helped the people of Croatia and Kozovo, Bosnia etc... rebuild at least a little of what was taken from them even though the lives can never be replaced and let the guns be used towards good as opposed to their evil past life.......... kinda a gun rehabilitation so to speak..... their previous owners were permanently rehabilitated and now we get to rehabilitate the guns :D

BTW the hand cycling will greatly help in the breakin period especially if ya just keep pulling the bolt to the rear and let go of it to simulate functioning so that the bolt lugs can lap themselves into the trunion lugs

it's easily possible I have my terminology wrong... I'm new to AKs and rifles in general.

the bolt carrier/bolt assembly is what I'm referring to. the bolt itself had some grime, the carrier has a little little bit of wear and showed some residue on the end of the piston. in neither case was the wear distressing at all. aside from the magazines and the bolt carrier/bolt, the weapon appears to be totally new (including sling swivels, wood furniture, sights, hand grip...).

when the "manual" (one page folded into quarters) refers to a cam, it is as follows:

"Attach the bolt to the bolt carrier. Grasp the bolt carrier with the left hand with the cam surfaced upward, and with the right hand install the bolt in the bolt carrier lug..."

dunno if that helps

by the way, I found the acetone/mineral spirits VERY helpful on the magazines, springs and followers. wouldn't have thought of it.

The wood was all "steralized" to get rid of any Serbian ethnic stock carvings, the pistol grip is new its a Century made item for 922R compliance parts, the sling swivels are all refinished the sights are original what year does yours have on the left side of the trunion? (where all the writing is on the side of the reciever) if after 1982 then it should have tritium night sights (be very gentle cleaning around then the viles break easily) half the time they still glow, from 82 forward they used glow in the dark paint and will have big round dots the tritium style just have tiny lil viles, if ya haven't found the night sights already they are in machined compartments the front one is folded down into the front sight post as a lil trap door the rear is folded down from the rear sight notch.....

Your 922R parts are

reciever is USA made

Barrel is USA made

Pistol grip is USA made

Tapco FCG counts as the last 3 parts needed to be legal

If ya swap the Pistol grip ya gotta stick with a USA one, the Century one they added the Finger grooves which I don't really care for, ALL of my Yugos are built by me from virgin parts sets and the custom ones we build in the shop all get this USA made pistol grip its $21 from Gunthings.com and is a copy of the older style Yugo wood pistol grip, the website url is on the picture...

Congrats on the new AK, I just picked one of these up myself and I really like it.

I have to admit however that $562 even after tax and and two mags is a little steep for an M70B1, I picked up my new one for $429 ($465 after tax) from J&G:p

However cost is irrelevant if it makes you happy and it sounds like it has done just that.

Have fun and buy lots of ammo!
