I would like to get an assault rifle before the ban comes back, I have shot a fair amount but all my guns were inherited from my father who never taught me about them :cuss:

So I was wondering what would you recommend?
I would like a fairly cheap ammo and for it to be fairly durable.

Also are there any good online sights to get ammo from? Wal-mart and such is expensive and there has to be a better price online somewhere, but ammo is not something I want to experiment with as it could be bad if a it is not made right, any suggestions?

I would also like a pistol (which I haven't shot much), I know a .22LR would be good, what gun in particular would you recommend in particular?

Odds are that no AW ban will get passed and better odds against signing, before late in 2009. If it happens.

Anyhow, the AR is good, as are the variants of the "AK". SKS, etc.

Ammo? Good luck. The worldwide demand for commodities is raising the price of ammunition components, whether bullets, cases or powder and primers.

Handgun? Pistol or revolver? If revolver, single-action or double-action? :)

Not to be pedantic, but I'm assuming you're speaking of non-automatic civilian lookalikes, yes? (A real automatic assault rifle will set you back $15,000 to $75,000, and you need to obtain a BATFE Form 4 first or you're looking at a 10-year Federal felony for possession.)

Of military-looking civilian rifles, I like AK lookalikes and the AR-15 platform. AK is cheaper ($400 or so), AR has better fit and finish and is more accurate, but more expensive ($800-$1200). Ammunition cost is comparable for both guns, and durability is probably similar.

Here is a good site on AR's:

I like the CAR Elite A4, but suggested retail is over $1000.

Since we have medical bills out the wazoo (my son is a cardiac kid), I went with a civvie AK lookalike in 2003:

That's a Romanian SAR-1 (7.62x39mm, similar to .30-30 Winchester) with a Kobra collimator sight.

On the pistol side, I don't have a lot of experience with .22 pistols, but based on reading, a good choice might actually be a quality .22LR revolver (Taurus or Smith & Wesson, depending on your price range). .22 pistols can be finicky about ammunition, and are sometimes less reliable.

Was looking at a Pistol

There seem to be about 500000 diffrent manufacturers and modles, any better than the rest??

And about 13 diffrent types of ammo for them
.22 Long Rifle
6.5 Grendel (.264 cal)
6.8 SPC (.270 cal)
.300 Whisper
7.62x39mm
9mm Parabellum
.45
.458 SOCOM
.50
.204 Ruger
.260
.308 Winchester
.243

I would like something with some power behind it (So not .22) but still something cheap, what type of ammo is generally cheap?

Start with some basic safety training. Your going to find that everyone has an opinion regarding rounds and costs.

Start with some requirements, what are you going to do with your new rifle and new pistol?

Ba safe, BSR

Mainly just want a target/plinking for now

Only resson I want an assalt rifle is cause they will soon be illegal again and I might want one latter on:D

The sight mentioned earler says FFL required on all the guns, does that just mean it has to be shipped to a gun shop?

If you're looking to join the party on a budget, I'd recommend an AK-47 clone such as a Romanian or Yugo. www.aimsurplus.com has these. ARs are nice guns, but can get very pricey.

For a handgun, a Stoeger Cougar or Taurus PT92 should run less than $400. Get one in 9mm, it's the cheapest handgun rounds out there.

And yes, if you buy a gun over the Net it MUST be shipped to an FFL.

ammo has sailed...

Even the cheap-o American Eagle .223 ammo went up a good dollar behind my back...

+1 on an AK

I got mine in .223REM... altho the 7.62x36 is supposedly cheaper, its hardly available around here.
