So, much of what I have read about reloading has a lot to do with the angle and diameter of the throat of the bullet/ and or case as it goes into your chamber and distance from rifle lands.

Is it a stupid idea to get a case prepared, skip the powder and hand seat the bullet you are loading, and slam it into the chamber to try to hand fit the bullet into the chamber? then measure your oal and case dimensions, and try to load to these? or is this not great cuz you cant' still tell how far the bullet is seated to the first rifling? Just trying to find a way to measure out a bore without casting or fancy measuring tools (i have none of these).:barf:

You still need to size a shell. Otherwise it may not fit into chamber. Then, to hand-seat a bullet, you may need to cut a few slots down from the neck.

My gauge to measure max OAL for a bullet/chamber combination looks close to that.

It is used exactly in the way that you have described.

Search the forums (several different ones) for a bunch of ideas to accomplish your goal without fancy tools. I use the one with the dowel and razor blade.

The method you suggest, including helg's finer execution, must be performed very carefully. If you jamb the bullet into the rifling too hard, the rifling will hold the bullet just for a moment while you begin to extract the case. Your OAL measurement will not be true, it will be too long. Helg knows how to do it very gently and carefully to get a true dimension. He may even put a bit of gun oil or grease on the bullet shoulder to help it release.

Or you can just seat and lightly crimp a few dummy rounds of varying length until you find the one that's too long. Then pull the bullets and use the components for live ammo.

Or, you can just color the bullet with candle smoke or a magic marker and keep seating deeper until the rifling stops rubbing it off the bullet.

and slam it into the chamber
Don't do that!

To answer your question, yes, it happens all the time. Yours is not a new idea. Sorry.:uhoh:
