BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Gunman among at least 22 killed at Virginia Tech, police chief says.
A state official says another person was wounded at the shooting at a dorm.
The state government official told The Associated Press about the casualties after students were told to stay inside for their own safety.
Earlier, Virginia Tech posted an advisory on its web site advising students that a shooting has occurred at a residence hall and a "gunman is loose on the campus."
The university has also told students to stay in their homes, away from windows.
The shooting happened this morning at West Ambler Johnston Hall. Police are at the scene, Virginia Tech says on its web site.
Officials have ordered the campus closed, the second time in less than a year because of a shooting.
The campus has 26,000 students.
In August 2006, the opening day of classes was cancelled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate killed a hospital guard and a sheriff's deputy involved in a massive manhunt just off the campus.
