OK- so how did the mom come to own one??? Did she buy it prior to 2002 (if i read the law correctly)?

Maybe some day we'll find out but I'm not holding my breath.

And can a state law supersede federal?

assault weapons in ct defined as having adj. stock, flash hider, and bayo lug. muzzle break, fixed stock, no bayo lug does not equal an assault weapon. certain black guns before 9/94 ban are not assault weapons (bushmaster, pwa, etc) as they were omitted from law (administrative screwup) but guns like the colt sporter = assault weapon. if you registered your "assault weapon"--then it would have been grandfathered.

ct has no mag cap. ban.
