I mailed my form 4 to the ATF last week. I just checked and they cashed my cheque yesterday. What does that mean, that I'm "pending"? Or something like that? I know people always talk about this process but I never understood what happens after they cash the cheque.

It means they received your paperwork and deposited your check, nothing more.

but I never understood what happens after they cash the cheque.

At some point in the next several weeks, someone will go over your paperwork and make sure it is all in order. If something is wrong, they will likely mail it back and have you correct whatever is wrong. They'll do a background check on you. When they decide that your background check is complete, and when they decide all of your paperwork looks good, they will mail the form 4 with a canceled tax stamp to your dealer, who will call you and tell you that your item is ready for pickup.

My last form 4 (no trust, submitted late last November) took about 8 weeks door to door.

My last one was 54 days from the date I mailed mine out. They seem to be holding pretty consistantly to that time frame.

BATFE does not have its own criminal data base or fingerprint files, so they send the paperwork on to the FBI for that processing. For obvious reasons, those application fingerprint cards get in line behind criminal checks and background investigations for government employment.

So with delays at both agencies, it does take time.

I'm real interested to know how long this takes with the new administration so please keep us updated. My M-11 took about 3 months with the previous administration.
