Hello guys Happy New year
I'm seriously considering getting and upgraded 300 Win Mag mostly for the purposes of hunting large game in North America from whitetails to moose and black bear.
Well I'd like to spend under $800 I'm willing to spend up to 1250 if there is a real reason to in value and quality.
I'd like it to be not too heavy but not necessarily a lightweight model although that's a plus but I'm more concerned about a nice smooth bolt and long range accuracy at least out to 600 yards.
But most of my shots will be 300 yards or less.
A threaded barrel would be a huge plus as I'm getting in Omega 300 suppressor.
I am mostly looking at Sako but I'm willing to consider several other makers I'm after a very smooth pleasant and reliable bolt and excellent accuracy without having to carry a cinder block.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Is it worth spending the extra to get a Sako model 85 or something like that that's older versus a Sako A7? Why?

Just buy a Tikka in 300 WSM instead of 300 WM. It'll be every bit as accurate and reliable as the Sako and save you money for ammo and the suppressor. Weight will be under 7 lbs. You can put a pretty heavy scope on there and still keep the total weight close to 8 lbs.

The 300 WSM comes within 50 fps of 300 WM, but burns 10-15 gr less powder doing it. No game animal will ever notice the 50 fps, but you will notice less recoil. Which is a big plus with heavy kickers in light rifles.

Not many serious shooters using any 300 mag for long range target shooting anymore, but the 300 WSM broke all the 1000 yard 300 WM records before the trend went to smaller 6.5 and 6mm cartridges for that type of shooting. Which have since broken all of the 300 WSM records. The 300 WSM is an accurate round, and just as readily available as anything else anymore.

Thanks but is it really worth adding another caliber to my collection?
I have a Tikka t3 lite 308 what more will the Winchester short mag do for me?
Do you have any direct experience with the quality difference between Sako 85 and their little brother Tikka t3?
And where does the "economy" model A7 fit in?

I have a few friends who recently purchased the Sauer 100. Well within your budget. I developed Barnes bullet rounds for both (.30-06 and .300 win mag). Only shot to 300 yards but I actually got both to shoot about 1/2 MOA or less. Honestly, everyone has their own preferences, but these things are light, dependable and accurate. I think they used a lot of the technology from Blaser (Blaser now owns Sauer and Mauser and Rigby). Sauer is a premier German brand and as ubiquitous in europe as a Remington or Winchester is here. I surprised when they came out with an affordable rifle - and even more surprised by how well it shoots once I got my hands on it! Good luck in your search and good hunting!

Thanks for the recommendation on Sauer

Would you guys recommend I get it in 300 Win Mag or 300 WSM?
Do you think Sauer even makes a 300 WSM?

If I were buying a hunting rifle meant for my own enjoyment in a 30cal magnum, with a budget of $850-1250, I’d look very closely at a Remington 700 CDL-SF in 300wsm. Nice walnut stock, stainless metalwork, and parts and service options are as common as sand on the beach. I’d personally rather have a .300 PRC, .300 win mag, .300 rum, and THEN .300wsm, but there’s nothing but personal preference in that ranking - so I’d concede that the CDL-SF is only offered in the WSM, and get that.

Thanks
What do you guys think of Browning BAR ( and can that be effectively Suppressed?
Or the Browning lever action BLR

I'm also considering the Ruger Guide Gun, I have it in 375 Ruger and adore it.

I'm torn between 300 Win Mag and 300 WSM what do you suggest I know I have more options if I go with 300 Win Mag

The short barrel (and rainbow laminate stock) of the Guide Gun is the only thing I might not favor with a 30cal magnum - but going into the choice with eyes wide open about that short barrel, it’s a good one to keep in contention.

Personally, I have an irrational subjective bias for Ruger M77’s, so I restocked a 77 Hawkeye All-weather 300 win mag (gonna be a 300 PRC in about 2 months).

Cool, so what is 300prc?
I'm looking for something that can take elk sized game at 600 yards with more knock down power than 308 and Max recoil of 300 Win Mag, thus was looking at 300 WSM or Another 300 Win Mag, but only am considering rifles I can put an Omega 300 can on.

My short list :
Bergara Ridge
Ruger Guide
Sako A7 or others
Tikka T3
Brownings

Ideas?
also how much velocity will I lose if I go with the Ruger guide gun with a 20 inch barrel and what will be the consequences of that if I never plan to hunt beyond 600 yards?

300 PRC is like the 6.5 Creedmoor of .300 magnums. It is a good design but only Hornady makes ammo and they only make two loads, so if you don't reload...

~100 fps.

So what will the practical effect be of that 100 foot per second boss in velocity if I go with the very well-designed Ruger Guide Gun w 20 inch barrel in 300 Win Mag if I'm not hunting past 600 yards?
What actual practical advantages would I get if I decide to go with 300 Winchester short mag?

None. All other things equal, you cut about a quarter pound and a half inch of rifle, then lose brass and ammo availability and variety.

I MIGHT feel as if I were being misleading to ignore/fail to acknowledge the WSM gets almost as much speed as the WM, but from less powder charge - which means less blast in a shorter barrel and easier load tuning. But technical distinctions like that often don’t make a significant difference in the field. Kind of like the difference in blast between a 270 and a 30-06; the 270 is notably louder and more concussive when fired side by side, but standing alone without reference to the other, that observation evaporates. So a 20” WSM should recoil and blast notably less than a 20” WM, and put less hate and heat on the baffles of your Omega.

(Note: double check with SiCo on the minimum barrel length for 300wm/WSM in the Omega. Seems I recall 300wm is a minimum 24”, but I could be misremembering that).

Between 300wsm, 300wm, 300rum, 300wby, 300 RCM, 300PRC, 300 RSAUM, and a dozen others, the in-field performance is exceptionally close, so a guy really has to make their own choice based on other factors. If you don’t reload, then the 300wm is the only choices with WSM a distant second place.

Thanks for all your suggestions gentleman
I ended up getting Sako A7 have the version that comes with a built-in removable muzzle brake.
This thing shoots like a pussycat:oops:super smooth and accurate and relatively lightweight and very sleek.
Fluted stainless steel with a pretty but dull finish to keep it from scaring off the critters and a simple but nice and easy to handle slightly beefed-up synthetic stock.
I traded a 686 plus and $100 for it
It's less kick than a 308 but slightly more than a 243 pretty unbelievable for 300 Win Mag.
