Mods, feel free to move if this is the wrong subforum.

I've had two customers this week buy firearms, and both claim they are doing so because they need to have a NICS check performed. Both were in the process of naturalizing, and both claim they have been repeatedly delayed because "federal background checks" are back-logged.

One was told by officials that the NICS check for a firearms purchase satisfies this. The other was told by a lawyer she retained for the purpose. Is this correct?

If not, as much as I love the idea of immigrants buying guns to satisfy citizenship requirements, I don't want them to be misled.

If so, why is it I can call in the check in five minutes while it takes ICE six years in some cases?

I am a legal immigrant and this is the first Ive heard of it , if the WA state DOL isnt allowed to get FBI info legaly I cant see how a nics check through a gun dealer could be construed legal , the background checks for immigration are much further reaching than the nics check , they check the background from the country of origin as well as the US background check . feel sorry for the people that think this will help but I think that USCIS will laugh at them , if they get around to it .:scrutiny:

Tom, let us know how this turns out if you hear back from these customers. As far as I am concerned I am all for them buying guns.

I'd be a little disappointed if the immigration department allowed that check as an alternative to a more thorough and internationallyl type of check, though.

Actually, anyone with permanent resident status can buy one.

As far as the NICS check, I haven't heard anything substantive yet. I've got a regular who's ICE, so I'll ask her and post my findings.

Actually, there is one state in the Union where that is not true. In Washington State, you have to get an Alien Firearms License. You can't get said license, because FBI won't allow NICS to be used for that purpose. We're working on that litle "infringement."

I've heard about that. Best of luck fighting it!
