I am planning on purchasing monocular real soon. What experience and recommendation can any of you make for a unit of $300 or so. Is the digital versions good or not. Right now what I am leaning towards Bushnell 6x50 and ATN 6x50 or 4x40 models. Help.

For that kind of money, don't expect very good performance, say <50 yards. If that suits your needs, then either model will likely work for you. Both will be able to be improved with an additional IR illuminator (much more powerful) such as one of the T20 pattern IR illuminators in the 800-850nm range or the Streamlight SuperTac IR illuminator. So you will be out another $60-90 if you add one of those, but they will likely double your viewing distance.

Except under good moonlight, Gen 1 and most digital scopes really require an illuminator. They come with one on them (usually), but the illuminators are often underpowered.

Thanks. I have seen the higher powered illuminators and thought they might help. The larger objective should gather more of the light as well I guess as well.

I own 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen NV equipment as well as a new Bushnell digital unit. In the $300 category, don't bother. Get a good powerful flashlight instead.

Seriously.

There are no decent NV scopes at levels under the 2nd gen and those are multiples of $300.
