Nightforce 5.5-22 or the Nikon tactical 4-16 with the nikoplex reticle. Its going on a 223 match rifle with a max range of 1000yds. Is the nightforce worth the extra 500? I have heard, read good things about the nikon. What do you think? TIA. Paul

I have a Nikon UCC Monarch 6.5-20X40 on my 700P and I just purchased a 6-18X40 for my AR project rifle. For the money, you cannot beat the Nikon. A friend of mine explained it to me this way... If you purchase a scope from a company like Nikon, that in addition to rifle scopes, has been making camera, microscope, and binocular lenses for many years, you can rest assured that their glass is some of the best available... A buddy of mine tried to sell me on a Nightforce for my 700P, but due to budgetary restrictions, I saved $800-$900 dollars by purchasing the Nikon... I am <1" with the 700P and will sing the praises of Nikon to anyone that will listen

For the money, I like the Nikon Monarch, but would probably prefer the 1" (non) tactical version and just use a 20 or 30 MOA rail.
The NiTac is a little pricey when compared to it's 1" counter part.

I have a 6.5-20x44mm 1" Monarch & Badger Ord. 20 MOA rail, that works perfectly well for my shooting requirements.

The new version of the Monarch's are due out next month.
A 4x erector and IIRC fixed 4" eye relief, larger ocular, will be an added bonus to an already good scope. May be worth waiting for and checking out.

The NF is a superb scope and well worth your money, if you have the cash to spend.

I have the Nightforce 12-42x56 with the NP-1RR (varmint) reticle. I bought it about 8 years ago when they were much less expensive, it was about $200 more than a Leupold 6-20x50. When I purchased it to put on a 6mm Remington I asked the guy if I should get the 32X or 42X. He said if you want to see the little holes on the targets then the 42X is better. Made sense to me so I that's what I purchased.
The reticle and the light gathering ability of the scope are nice features. It is heavy but on a bench rest rifle that's not really an issue. It has been a very good scope but I cannot compare it to the Nikon since I have never seen one.
Here is a picture of the Nightforce on my DPMS LR308:
