A week or two ago, a gentleman who claimed to work for the company that makes Nightstick Flashlights paid a visit to our fair forum asking what we like in flashlights, and making some suggestions. The thread seems to have disappeared, perhaps because it was too close to advertising. Anywho, during the thread I opined that the Streamlight Stinger was pretty much the best flashlight one could want and the kind gentleman offered some similar options. Well, me being the put up or shut up type... I can't honestly review a product if I haven't tried it. So I went off to Amazon and ordered a Nightstick NSR-9614XL, it appearing to be the closest thing they offer to a Stinger.

I honestly must say, I still can't review a NSR-9614XL, for what I got delivered to me was a NSR-9614B

The NSR-9614XL claims some impressive performance:

The NSR-9614B that I received claims about half that:

Oh, and then there is that fact that according to the manufacturers own website, the NSR-9614B is a discontinued model:

https://www.baycoproducts.com/nightstick-specialty/duty-personal-size/item/nsr-9614b

(Bayco is the parent company)

According to this seller, that model has been discontinued for a year and a half apparently:

So... maybe it was a mistake from a distributor who shipped old product by accident instead of the correct model:

Well, for one, it was Nightstick themselves who sold me the light on Amazon:

And two, of the 11 reviews for this model on Amazon, four of reviewers (I now make 5) have been shipped the wrong light:

So, if Nightstick would like to explain how this isn't a scam they are perpetuating through Amazon, I think we would all like to hear about it.

Since I did actually receive a light, just not the one I purchased, I came to do a review, so it's Review Time: Nightstick NSR-9614B

The question of the day is, "is it a viable alternative option to a Streamlight Stinger?"

Positives:
- It does have a good true white light that is about as bright as my old school incandescent bulb Ultra Stinger.
- The waffle pattern on the body would make you really have to work at trying to drop it.

Negatives:
- The tail cap switch seems to function better as a random chance generator than for activating the light on purpose
- The light randomly activates some times by touching the bezel... no switches involved

I'm going to stop right there. There's no point in testing battery life, cold soaking, charge times, etc. The light will never be used for any serious purpose if it can't be reliably activated when needed and self activates when it isn't.

Thanks, I noticed many of their models had counterparts in the StreamLight family, which I am WAY more familiar with. I was looking at the NightStick Mini-Tac, but, after your review, I think it would be prudent to pony up the extra dollar to get the StreamLight Pro-Tac. Thanks for taking the time to review it.
