I recently got a Remington 700 Win Mag and put a Leupold 1 piece base and rings on it to mount a Nikon Monarch 8-32/50 scope. I have been having issues with the gun shooting too high even with the elevation maxed down with this scope. I took it to the place I bought the scope to have it mounted and they placed a *shim* on the rear ring and it helped the problem slightly but still shooting high. The gap in the rings leads me to believe that more shim is not an option.

Has anyone run into this problem and if so what did you do to remedy it?

One idea I have is to get an adjustable base for the scope any other suggestions would be great.

Try some burris sig zee rings. They have + and - rings .005,.010,.015 and .020 offset plastic inserts. You can install them and in the front or rear. It should get your gun shooting with plenty of scope of adjustment

Ring height is not the problem, and shimming under one ring will put the tube in a bind. Did the gunsmith shim under the rear ring? Cause that would make it shoot even higher. What do you mean by bushing in the rear ring? Your base might be high in the rear, or not seated on the reciever. Reciever may be out of spec. Pics might help us out:)

uhhhhh that would be a VERY strange thing if that helped indeed considering that would make your POA even higher than it was.

ditto on the burris ring shim kit, midwayusa.com has them and I recommend taking your time with the calculations so you only have to do it once. Ideally, you should change the rings, but sometimes you do need to shim it. First center the scope's adjustments and try to hit the bullseye with the rings and shims, then use the scope's adjustments only when you have to, which gives you the maximum amount of adjustment the scope is capable of. HOPE I DIDNT CONFUSE YOU.

Have you tried bore sighting your setup? If you can, secure the rifle in a rest, and look through the bore at a target 100yrds away or so, and have someone dial the elevation turret for you. The retical should move nice and smooth, and get on target near the center of travel. If it still bottoms out the elevation, and your still too high, you may have a mount issue, or scope issue. I would remove the scope and base, and remount the base with either the frt or rear screws only, looking for the base raising up off the reciever, on the opposite end. If its not perfectly flat with either end snug, your reciever or base is not in spec.

Or what Kyle1974 said

Solution:

I took the gun back to the shop I got the scope from. They put a long range base on it and I finally got it working. I have a question though. When sighted in to center at 200 yards my elevation is 53 clicks down and 154 clicks up. Should I be concerned about this? I am wondering if my scope could have internal problems causing this offset. Either way the shop told me warranty was through the manufacturer only, even though it has been a whole week and a half since I purchased the scope. I guess I don't need to get in any hurry sending it back if it is an internal problem, and if it works I don't know if it is even worth messing with. The offset of the center just irritates me. I also had to remove the scope caps because the scope is sitting so low on the gun they don't fit...

I just had to put a pic of the beautiful 220gr SMK's I made last night :)

Glad you got it working. Having up travel is what you want, you can dial in the elevation when you need it. With that windage adjustable rear, you can set the scope windage right in the center, and adjust the base to get centered on target.:)
