My dad just gave me his favorite gun. An old Lefever Nitro Special. Has Lefever Arms Co., Ithica, NY on the barrel

Serial number, I think it is the serial number, 284875. It is a 12 gauge, and has a goose engraved on the side. Can anybody tell me anything about the gun. Is it considered collectable? Not really interested in price because I do not wish to sell. Thanks in advance.

Lefevers are collectible. The Nitro Specials were later guns and not worth as much as the earlier guns IIRC.

Lefever actually designed the first hammerless SXS, but he was the epitome of the "great designer, not so great businessman" who went broke a couple of times.

Great gun. Moving this to Shotguns.

The Lefever Nitro Special was built after Lefever Arms sold out to Ithaca in 1916.
Lefever operated as a subsidiary of Ithaca for a while and then became the economy gun division of the company. The Nitro Special came out in 1921 and was $30.85 in 1939 when a Field Grade Ithaca was $43.00

Found it, Dad's was made in 1929.
