New Jersey assembly no 2108, introduced by Reed Gusciora (D), would ban hundreds more rifles by reducing the "evil feature" count from 2 to 1. This would ban more rifles including the Springfield M1A and all Armalite type rifles.

The relevant text of the proposed legislation:
(6) A semi-automatic rifle that has the capability of accepting a detachable magazine and has at least one of the following configurations:

(a) A folding or telescoping stock;

(b) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;

(c) A bayonet mount;

(d) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; or

(e) A grenade launcher.

full text.

This is absolutely unacceptable. Our state puts up with an AWB that is already far more restrictive than the federal one, and this would make it far worse. Soon there will be no semiautomatic firearms with detachable magazines allowed in New Jersey. Fortunately, the bill has been stuck in assembly since early this year, however it may come up for discussion at any time. I have not yet ascertained when it will be discussed. I urge all New Jersey residents to write your district assemblypeople and explain why voting yes on this bill will cost them your vote.

This specific bill had a thread of its own? If it did, I haven't seen it.

Unfortunitely for those in restrictive states it really comes down to two choices.

1)Stay where you are because of other important reasons, family, friends, job etc. Fight the good fight and do your best to get the laws changed, which unfortunitely isn't very likely in most states, especially states mired in heavily restrictive laws and socialistic practices.

2)Get the hell out of dodge and start over.

I really feel for you guys because it can be a tough decision. Vote, write editorials, call your elected scumbags and call the good ones too.

I'll be out of here in less than seven years. Maybe less than five. But until that time comes, I'm going to buckle down. I've got my bushie and I'm gonna buy another one for insurance purposes (and spare parts) if one of these chickensh*t bills gets signed into law. If I have to register it, then so be it. I'll be long gone by the time NJ gets around to enacting a confiscation law.

I'll say this much. I own property here, but it's not where I'm going to retire. And it sure isn't where my kid is going to spend most of his life growing up.

Nope. Another thread on AW in NJ. And about the last two dozen threads on NJ.

It's very easy for the people in the shall-issue states to bash. But some of us choose to live here for whatever reason for the present time. In my case it's stable employment for me and more-or-less stable employment for my wife.

The bashing gets real old, real fast.

If you please could, show me a thread that discusses this specific bill, other than my post in general discussion that briefly referenced it.

NJ residents need to know about this.

The thread you linked is specifically about the proposed amendment to make it illegal for off-duty and retired cops to own "AW"s. This is about the proposed amendment that would ban hundreds more guns. I mentioned this amendment in that thread, but it is not the general focus of the thread and is not why the thread was started. There is a difference, is there not?

Anyone who bashes another state because of the restrictive legislation that state has without remembering the people who live (and shoot!) in that state does themselves no favors. It just means their state hasn't been targeted yet.

I sympathize with you. I'm here because of stable employment, too! So let's at least try to do something about this crap that comes down the pipe while we're here. It's our state, too, at least for the time being.

Raven,
How would the M1A qualify? I thought that didn't have any of the "evil" features?
Your M1A will become an illegal assault weapon if the bill is passed, due to its flash hider.

FWIW this bill was introduced February 9, 2004 ...... more than 8 months ago.

Which is good, but keep in mind that stuff like this can rear its ugly head at opportune times.

I just wanted my fellow NJers who didn't know about this already to keep it in mind. I don't see it on the committee schedule, but that doesn't mean it won't appear there.

It's always our business whenever there's injustice. Look throughout history of the evils that developed because "it wasn't our fight".
I just moved to PA from NJ and I'm experiencing a very unexpected phenomenon: I miss NJ and am saddened by how far gone it is.
The take-home message:
The fight belongs to us all.
