ARTESIA, N.M. -- An Artesia man was killed when the gun he was carrying accidentally discharged.

Jesus Levario, 40, and friends were scouting in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico Saturday. He was a passenger in a pickup that hit gravel and began to slide. State police say the motion of the pickup apparently caused the .22 handgun on Levario's lap to discharge, striking him in the abdomen.

Safety Tip: If the gun or knife starts to fall, just let it fall. If you try to catch it, Bad Things may happen.

Agreed, but hard to do at times. Reflex/instintive reaction usually has us automatically reach for things we drop. It's good to keep that in mind BEFORE we drop something.

Now would be an ideal time to assimilate that pearl.

I'd like to see tests done on that particular firearm to determine whether the sear/hammer can slip (or if it has a free floating firing pin, whether it has enough inertia to discharge the gun). Otherwise, could it be moider?
