I was out buying components and slipped up and bought 150gr hot-core bullets because I liked the shape of the round nose. The problem is there is no cannelure. I think I remember reading a thread here about loading these or similar for .30-.30 but I could not find it and I can't remember the final word on it. Would I be safe to load and use a Lee Factory Crimp? I can always trade the bullets or load them for a .308, but I still like the shape for .30-.30. So, reloaders, what do you think?

If the point of the bullet is too "pointy" you will have a problem in the 30-30. You really don't want to have a string fire in the tube.

I think the Lee FCD will properly crimp bullets that don't already have a cannelure. I think I remember reading a cannelure is not necessary but like I said, be sure the bullets are safe for use in a tube feed magazine. (a picture of the bullet would help)

There are tools available that will put a cannelure in a bullet. I believe one source is Sinclair international. I am sure there are others.

The crimp is not the "big" problem with pointy bullets in a tube magazine. The biggie is what Mr. ArchAngleCD mentioned....the point of the bullet is in line with the primer of the bullet in front of it (while in the tube magazine).

If you like/desire a spire point type bullet for your 30-30 (many do as they enhance accuracy vs. traditional flat-point 30-30 bullets)...suggest you trade or sell what you have and try Hornady Leverevolution bullets...built with a soft rubber tip at the end of the bullet that is designed to be safe in a tube magazine.

Guys, I like the shape of the ROUND nose. The question was not about spire points in a tube magazine. The question is will the non-cannelured bullets hold in place. With a cannelure you use a roll crimp which will hold in the tube mag under recoil. Do any of you experienced loaders know if the Lee Factory Crimp will prevent set back in this application?

Yes, that's what the Lee Factory Crimp was designed to do. With the combination of thin brass, mag tube spring pressure and recoil inertia, a good crimp keeps it all together.

You can use the roll crimp without the cannular. Works like a taper crimp, look for the shiny ring on the lip of the case. If your neck tension is good, shouldn't need much of a crimp, maybe a .001 or so. I usually use bullets with the groove, but don't crimp more than just to get the 'ring'. No problems after ~ 500 rnd of 30-30 and 308 ME, some of the brass is on 5 or 6 loadings.

What makes you think you need to crimp them? They will be fine without it. Just make sure you have enough neck tension and you won't have a problem.

A bigger problem might be what velocity level those bullets were designed for?

If they were designed for 30-30 tube magazine use, they would have had a cannulure.

Seems to me those are bullets intended for a bolt-action in 30-06 - 300 Mag class, and will have heavier construction then a 30-30 class bullet.

That being the case, expansion will be poor at 30-30 velocity.
