This happened to two friends of friends of mine recently. What would you have done. I live in Wisconsin where we still do not have CCW. Seemingly the same person came up to these two folks cars a week apart while they were driving near downtown during the day. He tapped on the window and opened their door and sat down in their cars at the stop sign. He then pulled out a knife and said "give me your money". They did. The perp then demanded that one of them then drive to an ATM as the $60 he gave him wasn't enough. When he got out at the ATM he drove off. He did get cut once above his eye. The second friend gave money and the guy left but only after he cut him a number of times. Both called the police after and went to the hospital to get cleaned up.

So, someone gets into your car, pulls a knife and demands money...what do you do given the m.o. I've described? I for example carry a Benchmade knife on me...do I get into a knife fight with him in the car? Carry pepper spray? Your thoughts...

Let's back up a little. If this is happening in your area, the first thought is preventative--don't ride around with your doors unlocked. Stop at lights/stop signs in such a manner as to give yourself an escape route. If you've made the mistake of leaving your doors unlocked or granting the bad guy a possible entry, pull away--fast--as he's opening the door.

If the guy gets inside, exit the car and run to safety.

Of the options you describe, I suppose I'd advocate a layered approach--(1) avoid the situation if you can, (2) try to escape in your car before he gains entry if you can, (3) if he's attempting entry and you're stuck, escape, (4) if you're stuck in the car and he's entering go for the pepper spray and get the heck out of Dodge, (5) if you find yourself trapped in the car with the perp, wait for an opportunity and attack with a knife.

My feeling, though, is that if you've gotten beyond #1, particularly knowing that there's a predator with this m.o. in your area, you've already blown it.

Does anyone still drive around with their doors unlocked?

If he got in anyway, I'd stop, yank the key, exit the car, grab the baseball bat I keep on the driver's side sill next to the seat, close the door, lock him in the car, and call 911 on my cell while circling the car to his side with the bat to prevent his escape. If he got out and came toward me with the knife I'd do my Wade Boggs thing.

i agree with Duke! besides you dont want to spray pepper spray if your in a car with a BG with a knife.

+1 Mister Mike and +1 Duke.

And why did the state not allow the CCW thing?

Anyone hopping into MY car flashing a knife and sprouting words of crime = felony will get dead by gunshot or fried by taser and then dead by gunshot. Thier choice.

The republicans in the legislature has tried to get CCW passed a number of times, but our Democratic governor Doyle would never sign it in to law. They tried to get a veto proof majority, but were 1 or 2 votes short each time. Hopefully in next years election, we can get a republican into the governors house.

Wow...you have to be a REAL genius to let someone sit on your car, then cut you with a knife...crazy guy approaces my car (if I was unarmed) window goes up, lock goes on. Not much he can do with a knife at that point, but you have one hell of a weapon at your disposal. This is another good reason to leave space between you and the next car at any stop...ramming speed! ;-)

I don't know about Wisconsin, but where I live (#2 in nation for violent crime) I don't even think about driving around with the doors unlocked.

I am also extremely aware of every individual around me and every vehicle as well. I make sure that if a red light or a stop sign is coming, that it is a slow roll, and almost never come to a complete stop. I also make sure to never to be right behind a stopped vehicle. Always allow a good car length between myself and the car in front.

As for some random guy approaching my car and tapping my window with a knife, I definitely would have hit the gas. (doors would have been locked)

Had the bad guy been tapping on my window with a gun, it would be a completely different call. Your probably s.o.l.

Perhaps I'm neurotic, but I am intent on never being surprised with a tap on my car door.

Your friends are extremely lucky to have escaped with only a few cuts.

Back home we used to be mobbed at every light downtown by people waving newspapers, windshield squeezes etc and forcing themselves onto your car for money. That was the last straw as far as I was concerned.

If you really want to think about what you'd do, rent a car for a day and practice flooring it, slamming the brakes, flooring it and then immediately throwing it in reverse. If you have 100% coverage and are a jerk, then you won't even mind dinging it up.

If you are wearing your seat belt, and if you don't mind damaging your car body, transmission and brakes, then you'll learn that you don't need much space to make your car into a bucking bronco of blunt force trauma to an unbelted passenger or someone nearby. If you can parallel park and are willing to do it quick and dirty, then nobody standing next to your car tapping on the window with a knife or pistol is safe - you can test the 1st law of Newtonian physics (can your car and his body occupy the same space at the same time?). Much much better to drive away; but if you can't drive away then use every advantage until you are safe.

Why don't they lock their car doors?

If someone opens you car door all of a sudden, drive away. Even 15 mph will be difficult to keep up with. Honk loudly, and if activate your panic alarm. (This is assuming he isn't in the car yet) Getting police attention is good.

  1. Lock your doors.
  2. Keep a firearm while in the vehicle.
  3. Move to a shall-issue state.
  4. Get your carry permit.
  5. Live happily ever after.

I keep a full sized pry bar, pipe wrench and a piece of steel tubing. If anyone even tried to open my door they would have a piece of steel in their face before they can run off.

Around here, he would be dead. I have a 2500hd, when you put it in gear the doors lock. Same for my wifes tahoe. Well, the tahoe locks when you start it. But around here it is legal to shoot someone who's carjacking you or gains entry without permission. A couple of years ago a man woke up and found someone trying to break into his car. He shouted from his front door that he would shoot. They laughed at him. He killed one and wounded the other. No charges. Don't think he even got arrested. He had warned them. On a side note, my wifes tahoe is 4 wheel drive. I've told her if someone tries something like that to put it in 4 wheel drive and mash the gas. It should be able to push anyone in her way. That was the result of a recent problem that was in this area. Someone was rear-ending people then he would kidnap them when they got out of their vehicle. The cops were also on tv telling people not to stop.

Ah yes the old California Tap, fill a car with illegals and a driver, wreck it into a target vehicle and go after the occupants when THEY get out.

I frankly dont do taps. Someone taps our vehicle we aint stopping for :cuss: But once the carry permit arrives, we can probably be in a better situation if something does happen.

The carry permit shouldn't have any bearing on the decision. Just mash the gas and get the hell out of there either way.
