Greetings from Australia

My name is Scott.

I am a Police Firearm collector. I collect firearms from Police Services all around the world.

In Australia to be allowed to collect Police pistols you have to prove that Police actually use the weapons you are collecting.

The 2 I wish to add to my collection are the Taurus 85 ultra lite and the North American Arms 22MS. I imagine both of these firearms would not be service issue but would be used for back up or personal carry.

Are there any Police Officers you know who use these firearms? And if so in what capacity

If you could advise me I would be very grateful.

I'm not sure about the NAA but, I bet if you called Taurus customer service and explained the situation they could at least give you a short list of departments that specifically mention the Model85 on their approved list of off-duty weapons. There HAS to be at least one or two departments that mention it specifically by name.

You could try the same with NAA, but I suspect you will have better luck seeking information from individual officers that can carry anything off duty of their choosing. (NAA could probably provide a letter stating that they have sold to a number of police officers on an individual basis).

Contact Smith & Wesson. They are the largest provider of handguns to Police agencies over the last 100 years - bar none. Second would be Glock. Third maybe SIG or Beretta - Colt if you go way back.

NAA and Taurus may be on the list of "guns you MAY have for off duty carry" - but I'll bet neither would make the list of "Prefered Carry" weapons.

I have several officers who visit my shop and I've been told many times that they and others have carried the NAA .22 mini revolver as a 3'rd line backup weapon. Whether that allows you in Australia to have one, I have no idea.
