It depends so much on the individual as well as where they're from.

I've had folks from the UK here for cookouts and they've ranged from interested to mildly anti. The most enthusiastic one after being taught to shoot was the mildly anti lady who insisted on taking her target back home with her.

Regardless, there's nothing you can do about rude people except to exclude them from your life.

Big Matt and Indian Dave:

I have to say that's a pretty sweeping generalization you put out there. I'm one of those transplants having just moved from Queens three weeks ago. I think I have a lot of common sense as well as book smarts even when discussing guns. Yes, I commute to Manhatten to work because it was the only way to work the job I wanted and made good enough money to own a beautiful home in an area I liked. It to me was better than demanding "affordable housing" from the Gov. or some other "relief" program.
I so far have loved the area and have thankfully not yet met anyone who has an elitist attitude such as yours. While I am sure that there are some problems with the group you discuss I wonder if you could tell me how many people have moved to the area and are as stupid as you appear to think we all are. How many have moved to the area and you would'nt even know because you all have the same values, maybe even why they moved to that area? My point being you probably don't know yet you have no problem with a sweeping generalization of all, makes me wonder who really has common sense.

To the OP: That sucks but where not all like that so don't let it be a generalized statement. The only anti's in my family is my sister-in-law's family and while my whole family loves guns and is from NYC her whole family is from N.C. and thinks they should all be confiscated.

I moved here from NJ 12 years ago and made a complete recovery, but it seems like you can never escape some of the crap. We have a couple of transfers from NYC at my store and they almost sh*t where they stood when I brought this pic of my niece and nephew shooting my 22. vincentshooting.jpg

By Any Means, I apologize. I did not mean to insult you. You will find Pennsylvania a great place to live. What part of PA are you in? There are many nice places here. I should read my reply before sending it.

As a native Southerner I have seen my home state overrun first by Northerners then by Latinos. The times they are a changing there isn't really anything you or I can do to change that. I usually seem to get along better with people from Upstate New York than I do the ones from the city. Though most are ok they are just from a different culture. However showing up uninvited to a neighbors Bar-B-Q & expecting to fed without it being offered-as well as trying to tell another person how to comport themselves in their own home(with guns or anything else is just rude). I probably wouldn't have open carried to the cook out. But I am with you on offering the option of leaving to these people. Also to asking the neighbor to leave. What can you say wherever you live there are a certain amount of mannerless idiots. As far as guns-being the first city born generation of a family with rural roots, guns were always just another tool in the arsenal of survival. I wasn't really raised on guns but my parents weren't anti either. My Father just wasn't really into hunting much (though he did have an old Winchester 22 pump gun & a Revelation 12 gauge pump). He even was given an old Ivers Johnson 38 after I got older. But they were always around & we knew where they were & what they were for.

My state (Virginia) is rapidly becoming a split-personality state like New York, Illinois, etc, where many people from out of the region move into a major metropolitan area (in this case metro DC) and as a result of the political and social culture is changed. Northern VA has seen explosive population growth, much of it coming either from overseas or from the northeast, and as a result is trending deep-blue politically. This might be the first time VA goes Democrat in almost 40 years.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard people from southwest VA, Richmond, etc demeaned as rednecks, hicks, etc by people from the metro DC area who hold elitist attitudes and go to my school. One girl told me that it was "the only sane part of the state". Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of pro-gun people up there - heck, the NRA is located in Fairfax - but the political climate there is not trending for the better. What I dread is seeing one of the best-run states in the Union turned into a New York or Illinois, where a vocal group of leftists seizes power in the state government via Northern VA and starts grabbing guns, raising taxes, driving away jobs, etc. If it gets to that day, I will relocate.

So yes, for those in Florida, I feel your pain. While having an influx of new population is good for the local economy, it's unfortunate that many of these people are ignorant of or outright demeaning towards many aspects of the local culture.

==MIKE->I usually seem to get along better with people from Upstate New York than I do the ones from the city
hahahah Thats because we really are the people of west NYstate The down staters have totally wrecked this state. We Pray we can cut the state off above Albany and finally be rid of the Yankee extreamest liberals -Then we could be a free state like One of them southern states.
Moving to KY as fast as I can !!!!!!

I'm from NY ...

... but the "other" New York. You gotta remember that there are two, distinct and dissimilar New Yorks. There is NYC, and everything else.

I'm from "everywhere else". Finger lakes to be more precise. Where in HS it wasn't uncommon for me to sling a 22 rifle across my back, get on my motorcycle and ride through town up to the dump to shoot rats. Probably did that once a week, and nobody thought a thing of it.

I now have the great fortune of living in central South Carolina (after 25 years in the Washington DC area ... don't get me started!), and I like it here just fine, thank you. Finger lakes would have been fine again too ... but if I never shovel snow again it will be just fine with me!

I grew up in MD. My folks were very pro2A, but weren't gun owners. I thought all guns were registered and AWB's like MD and CA still have were in effect everywhere. When I walked into the local gun shop in FL where I was going to college, the refreshing dialogue went as follows:
me: so what's the legal deal with this here yugo SKS?
salesman: what the...where you from, boy, California?
me: no, sir. Maryland.
Salesman: pfff...just as bad. Listen, the SKS is a rifle, and in the state of Florida, a rifle is a rifle is a rifle.
me: I'll take it.

In my part of arkansas you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone from california. Since I sound like a yankee they always used to siddle up to me and gripe about arkies. I finally got sick of it and started telling people I'm from arkansas and happen to love the place.

What really gripes me is I've lived in california. I'm thinking it was probably heaven on earth before they completely screwed up the place. I just wish those folks, and their latino buddies, would bypass my state and go the hell someplace else. Sadly, it isn't happening. Now I have to live with all the problems these clowns are bringing to my state. Pathetic.

Bingo! Thank you.

GOOD and BAD people all over this country and overseas/around the world.

I was born in NY. ; . )

Raised in Maryland. (Johns-Hopkins job and school for my late Mom. Dad told her to go for it.)

Moved to a farm/lake Great Lakes state (Late husband's home state not mine!) with a lying RINO, anti gun, kiss up to the FOP and Highway Patrol who did NOT want mere serfs to carry!

I met MORE anti gun people and fill in the blank people in the Midwest than I ever did on the 'east coast'! For that matter, I met more of the L word here in a university town in Western Montana than I EVER did back east too. NOT all of them but enough of them. MOST MT people and 'transplants' are PRO GUN and/or keep their mouths shut except for 'some' real ANTI gunners who are clueLESS in many other matters too! Grin.

The east coast people that I KNEW and were raised by were REAL Constitution folks and not swayed by the R wing - L wing deal. They would call a spade a spade in ANY PRO GUN issue and putting America First. They were NOT politically correct yet they were polite - used manners.

I like Northern and Southern Folks. East Coast - West Coast. Midwest people who have a CLUE like all of the others too.

Some people have tunnel vision.

You can't think one way because you have Liberals and Conservatives aka L wing & R wing people who both LOVE GUNS and/or HATE GUNS.

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX.

Is the 'Yorkie' word supposed to be bad or what?

Hey! OK - no problem. I like the M word aka MILITIA. ; . )

Meanwhile my New England and New York forefathers - a few ships past the Mayflower = my Mother's side and my LEGAL immigrant not illegal alien Father are smiling at this post in heaven.

Freedom, firearms and peace,

i live in the northeastern part of PA, or NEPA, Scranton specifically. i'm one of those ignorant NYC transplant jerks some are fond of talking about. i was shocked by the gun culture of PA, but i had a good reason: GUNS ARE ILLEGAL IN NYC. my dad owned one illegally, as did i. most otherwise law abiding peopleowned their guns illegally in NYC. i was shocked that i could walk into a walmart and buy a shotugn or rifle, and that i could buy a handgun with a driver's license and a 10 minutes background check. and it only took me 15 minutes to get my license to carry (LTCF).

i will say that Monroe county, Stroudsburg in particular, is becoming infested with everything that i hated about NYC.

Just a few random thoughts.

1. It's your party and you can do anything you like.

2. The "Lady" who made disparaging remarks was rude by any definition.

3. I like guns. All of 'em.

4. However, I've never been to a party where the host and a number of
others are carrying weapons on their hips. I'm sure you're all very safety
conscious. But where I come from (The South), I'd rather put the loaded
weapons away when the crowd starts downing their favorite beverages
(assuming of course, it ain't sweet tea).

5. I'm sure I've mightily offended many by that last remark. You may fire
when ready.

There are PRO GUN people who even LIVE IN NYC, not only in NY STATE, who have to deal with the BS !@#$%^&*()_+! gun laws too.

Think outside of the box.

This is like saying that all Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, etc. are X, Y or Z in ANY issue!

Good and bad in ALL people no matter where they come from!

Catherine

I don't think it's a North and South issue. Every state regardless of it's geography is going to have anti's and pro-gun advocates. Every region has their anti gun areas and their pro gun areas.

The Northeast has places like New York City which tend to be fairly anti but also have places such as Vermont which happen to be very friendly. While the Midwest is pretty pro gun for the most part there are areas like Chicago which aren't particularly gun friendly. Even in the cities or states that tend to be anti gun there is still a pretty big RKBA following. Look at California, the gun laws there are far from perfect but how many members do we have here that are from Cali and doing what they can to make things better? Quite a few.

If it WAS a North/South issue, then the University of Texas at Austin would, by the OP's standards, legalized CCW on campus already. I meet anti-gun idiots in Texas. too. I remember standing in a Class 3 store once. A guy was browsing double barreled shotguns and I pointed towards a Daewoo full auto-shotgun; "here's what you want," I said with a grin. Said the Texan in reply, "Why'd I all want that? That ain't a huntin' gun". See, what I mean.

Bingo to the Prince! ; . )

Thank you.

If it was a NORTH and SOUTH issue some of those NO open carry states would have FULL open carry, you don't need a "PERMIT" and it is ALL ALLOWED, and not only conceal carry too!

Catherine

Im from PA and about the redneckiest thing going around here, but Im having trouble processing why you would need that much firepower at a BBQ? Is there a range on the property?

Am you shooting the pig then BBQ'n it?

Do you BBQ in a bad neighborhood?

.

Things are differant where I came from

It is a simple mind set problem. There is this idea that we must be protected from ourselves, others and everything.

NPR's Car Talk radio show this weekend was a classic case of this.
A lady called in and ask if her husband's idea of using a totally restored 1967 MGB GT as a daily driver was ok.
Tom and Ray (From HAvard Square) said this was CRAAAZZY!! This car does not even have AIRBAGS!! or ANTI Lock brakes, side impact protection. A rolling death trap..... They then told her to buy the cheapest Kia because it would be much safer.

The day someone gives up a classic British sports car for a Korean Compact because it is "safer" is a sad sad day. To think my dear old mom drove me and 6 other boys to the club scouts rifle range in the back of a 1964 chevy pickup with the tailgate down!! How did I survive my childhood.!!

I am a Son of the South and do not need your help to protect my family. But if you need help I will be glad bring my rifle or my truck and lend a hand.

That N word really needs to be kicked to the curb.

Growing up in Massachusetts I was never introduced to guns and didn't have any friends that were into shooting. I don't even remember thinking about guns for the first 20 years of my life (except the ones that were made of PVC and shot potatoes!) .

I couldn't even take you to a shooting range there because I truly don't know where any are!

Of course when I moved to Florida things were completely different. Much higher crime and much higher rate of gun ownership. I'm not linking the two here because the demographics are so different.

I live on Long Island and work in New York City (not to far from the Empire State Building).

I wholeheartedly believe in our 2nd Amendment rights and believe that "keep and bear" means "to own and carry". The problem is I live in a portion of the state that tramples on the 2nd Amendment to the point it barely has meaning here!!

I believe as the original poster does - that if you don't like my carrying a gun then either shut your mouth or leave!!

There are many New Yorkers (mostly from the southern portion of the state) the have a Nazi-like belief that only the police and military should have guns. These people many times eventually move out of New York to states that have real freedoms and the want to change the places they go to so that they mirror the bad things from New York. These people need to learn what real freedom and liberty is!!

I can't wait to move out of New York to someplace where freedom and liberty is held dear!!

Luke
