I understand that the quality of the Marlins went downhill for a number of years after their purchase by Remington and their facility was moved. I have been looking at a micro-groove 1894S Marlin in 44-40, stamped North Haven, CT. I haven't been able to identify the date when it was manufactured.

Can anyone advise on the quality of this particular model?

Marlin year of mfr. This works for all number type s/n Marlins. Most Remlins start with an alphabet such as MM.

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

The code of subtracting the 1st 2 digits from 100 works with most common production Marlins. With special runs where only a few were made it does not always work and the SN's are not listed on any of the online websites. It may be accurate on this rifle, you may have to call Marlin.

I'm not familiar with this rifle, but it would be rare to find an older Marlin that had serious problems.

I actually prefer New Haven made Marlins...

:D
Actually North Haven is correct and what the barrels read. At least my Marlin 444 barrel reads North Haven Ct. :)

Marlin Firearms Co., formerly of North Haven, Connecticut, is a manufacturer of high power, center fire, lever action, bolt-action, and .22 caliber rimfire rifles. In the past, the company made shotguns, derringers and revolvers. Marlin owned the firearm manufacturer H & R Firearms. In 2007, Remington Arms, part of the Freedom Group acquired Marlin Firearms. Remington currently produces Marlin brand firearms at its Kentucky and New York manufacturing facilities.

If I remember correctly, those were only made in 1993-1994, well before the Remington fiasco. Serial# should start with 4440. A nice rifle in a limited production caliber.

Marlin was in fact in New Haven for about 100 years before moving to the North Haven plant...

Started in 1870 on State Street in New Haven, then Willow Street; Moved to North Haven plant in 1968...

Thank you for the fine Marlin history. I had forgotten and I think the move between New and North Haven was something like 10 miles? Now I much better understand your post reference.

Thanks
Ron
