Greetings all -

With my recent return to .45ACP shooting, I am breaking out my trusty Dillon SDB press and ordering reloading supplies. Given the $20 hazardous material handling fees to order primers and powder, does anyone have a good source for primers (WLP prefered) and powder (231, Bullseye, or AA#5) in Northern VA area? I'd like to start with ~1000 primers and 1 lb of powder to work up the right load for my range gun before jumping in with a larger order.

Thanks for the help!

Guns & Ammo in Manassas (on 28, just south of 234) carries powder and primers --that's where I usually go

Clark Brothers in Warrenton (on 29, just north of rt. 17) has a pretty good selection, but I remember their prices being kind of high.

Gilbert's Small Arms in Lorton/Springfield has a limited selection of components, but they carry some.

Shooters Paradise in Woodbridge occasionally has a few pounds of powder or primers (at least they did last time I was there)

Gander Mountain in Fredericksburg has a decent selection of components, but I don't remember what their prices were like.

It'll probably end up being cheaper to go to Guns & Ammo (or one of the others) and try out a few powders and primers. When you find your load, buying an 8# jug or two and paying the hazmat fee will probably end up being a fair bit cheaper.

You also might look for a show that comes to Chantilly.

I hear that it is one of the best shows around!

As for a load for your .45 acp., Here is a very accurate load that won't break the bank, or your pistol.

200 gr. Hardcast LSWC (H&G #68 style bullet)
Federal or Winchester brass (preferred) but, any good brass will do
5.7 gr. of Winchester W-231 powder
Winchester LP primer

This load shoots 907 fps out of my Gold Cup and will shoot the X-ring out of the target at 25 yds. and using hardcast bullets, there is no leading of my barrel.
My Gold Cup really likes this load!

Thanks for feedback, Gents - I'll have to check out G&A in Manassas soon - any idea on when the Gun Show comes to Chantilly?

The next significant Northern VA gun show will be at the Dulles Expo Center 3/30 - 4/1.

The Guns & Ammo Warehouse people are very friendly, but a little shy on reloading supplies. I just "found" Green Top in Glen Allen, VA, about an hour an a half south of the Beltway. Reasonable selection of powder, primers, and bullets, but short on equipment.

This past weekend, I was in the hour-or-so-away range of the Cabela's near Wheeling, WV, which made it practically just down the block, so to speak. Berry's Bullets were running $18-$19 per 250 box. The prices for powder and primers weren't anything to brag about, but I got to take a good comparitive look at presses. Very educational for a new kid on the block.

Vender from Warrenton sets up at the Dulles Expo Shows, right rear corner of the building.Good prices on powder and primers. If he dosen't have what yiu need he will get it for you.On my last purchase he beat Midsouth and Graft.

I totally forgot about Green Top! I must be having brain-cramps.

They are some good people to deal with. I've been driving down there for many, many years.
Bought my Silver Pigeon II from them.

Before I forget, there used to be a place in Front Royal called (duh) Front Royal Supply.
If they didn't have what you need. . . you don't need it.
Everything from projectiles to pistols. Everything.
I don't know if they are still in business. Dang, dusting off the cobb-webs in my head, tonight.
