NOSLER 26, oh please...

I think the 6.5-284 has been standardized by Norma. Also, the 26 Nosler appears to dabble in levels of excess that the 6.5-284 can't touch. The 6.5-284 has a case capacity of just under 70 grains of water, but if the 26 Nosler is based on the 375 Ruger, or RUM case it should have a capacity exceeding 90 grains of water.

A couple years back I was kicking around building a 6.5-300 Wby Mag wildcat. This (the Nosler 26) would pretty much be the same thing without the venturi shoulder.

With the variety of 6.5 through .338 magnums out there with VLD bullets that will stay supersonic WELL past 1000 yards, I wonder how long before someone popularizes a 1,500yd F-class type competition... (or am I behind the ball living in a state where there are limited opportunities to get past 100-200yd)

Sorry, but I don't understand why they came out with another overbored cartridge. They had problems with throat erosion with the 264 Win Mag and didn't learn a thing. Then you have the extra cost for an exotic round coupled with an ammo shortage. Poor marketing if you ask me. I will settle for a Swede. As for killing deer at 600+ yards, no thanks. They are to great of a game animal to lose to a trigger finger fueled by ego.

I totally agree in this being a case of overbore BUT honestly I like some overbore cartridges AND if you don't plan on shooting them all that often, then what's the big deal? I'm pretty sure you could get at least 500 through it before you started having accuracy issues due to barrel and throat erosion. I think most of the bolt action rifles in my safe have less than 500 rounds each on them. Most of them are 10+ years old.

Point being if you're in the market for this cartridge or one like it, then you already are (or should be) aware that it is overbore.

Fast and flat shooting cartridges are cool IMO!

1948,

Don't get me wrong. I shoot a 257 Weatherby and love it. My point is, why do they keep coming out with cartridges that duplicate the performance of older rounds? Especially when ammo for the old standbys is cheaper and more available. The Weatherby is an exceptional round but, to be truthful, a 25-06 is not that far behind on paper. I would imagine that the Nosler would not outshine the 264 WM by much if any.

I don't understand why people get so offended at new offerings. You're not required to turn in your old guns and buy new guns in new chamberings. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Shocking endorsement, what a surprise that he choose to say it's a great cartridge.

“I really feel the 26 Nosler® has great value amongst the large family of 6.5mm cartridges. With minimal recoil, tremendous velocity, energy and the ability to point and shoot at the intended target up to a quarter mile away, this is the quintessential deer, antelope and long-range target cartridge available on the market today.” –Bob Nosler, CEO/President Nosler, Inc.

I'm not offended by businesses trying to make money though innovation. I am insulted when they pitch their "new" sliced bread with organic sesame seeds as "THE GREATEST INNOVATION IN SLICED BREAD SINCE SLICED BREAD WITH UNCERTIFIED ORGANIC SESAME SEEDS!!!!!"

According to Nosler's literature, the Nosler 26 is approx 300fps faster than the 264 Win Mag with the same bullet weights. That's a substantial increase.

I've got a 257 Wby & a 25-06. Both are great and both will kill deer but I think the difference between them is more than negligible.

Just wondering

I reload and shoot both a 6.5x284 and a .264wm. Both with 26"barrels. I also do the same with a 300 RUM. I personally have no interest in another 6.5 caliber.
I just put a fired primer in a sized 300RUM case and it held in excess of 113 gr. of water. I have no idea how much, if any, Nosler may have modified the length/shoulder of their 26 using this 404 Jeffery case but it will no doubt hold a lot of powder.
I'd be curious about recoil. The 300RUM is just flat punishing shooting off a bench.
