i was recently given 3 boxes of 50 nosler ballistic tip bullets in .308 dia. and 165 gr.

i have always used hornady interlocks for deer and settled on nosler partitions (since i asked a few months ago) for elk.

my question is this: Do these ballistic tips really "blow up like a tactical nuke" :what: on bone or dense muscle? i am all about good quick expansion but dont want the collateral meat damage if if decide to pop just behind the shoulder (not to mention the gut spill from shrapnel).

anyone had experience using these and what are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Yes, they are terrible. Like a claymore going off on deer. Blows them damn near in half.

I'll dispose of them for you at no charge.

;)

A tactical nuke is pretty bad ju ju.

They prob aren't as bad as rumored, unless you hit bone.

They are free, which is an excellent price. Try one and find out.

If you don't like em, I'll be glad to take em off your hands as well :D

I always thought the Nosler bT was over expanding. It does expand well at lower velocities. I shoot the 150 in my 12" Contender and it's taken 5 deer with good expansion and 100 percent penetration. I load it in .308 and I shot one deer stem to stern, in his rump, out his neck, penetrated 5 feet of venison. I was impressed. I began to wonder why I'd ever loaded those Barnes 140s. :D

I've heard the earlier bullets came apart pretty quick, but that's long since been remedied. The BT is my go-to bullet for deer. My experience is with Noslers made in the last 10-15 years.

Just this season my sister shot a deer at about 60 yards with a 165 BT out of a 30-06 using H4350 (the load manual says 2900 fps, but while it is hot I don't have a chrono to verify). Anyway, the bullet held up and the deer went down.

I haven't had problems with penetration or collateral damage. I actually got lucky and after shooting a deer just behind the heart with a 150 BT at 3000 fps, some of the bullet blew up the top of the liver, diagphram, and got a good bit of lung tissue so the deer went down after about 10 steps. I'm of the opinion that many other bullets would have left me an unpleasant tracking job.

I think Nosler rates the BT for 1800-3100 fps. Very useful range for non-magnum 30 cals.

BT's can blow up at shorter distances. I have some 180 gr .308 that needs the right amount of Varget. Any body know?

I have shot a lot of fallow deer up to 170 pound with the Nosler 165 BTs . It kills them dead as dead.

i dont think ill be using them for elk like i said. i have some nosler partitions for that. i also got 2 boxes of 50 barnes x bullets in 165 gr at the same time as the BTs. i just have no idea on how to load them!
