Note to self: don’t tumble .357 mag and 5.7X28 together

Tumbled a batch of mixed range pickup brass (pre-sorting) in relatively uncommon calibers (some of which I don’t even have a firearm chambered for, like 5.7, .300BO or .22-250) and pretty much none of the 5.7 got clean LOLView attachment 1193468
Well there’s your problem: you left the refrigerator door open all night! They got Frozen together! 🤣

That is why I refused to own a .40 S&W or even stand close to friends with a 40 S&W at the range for the longest time. 9mm cases love to wedge themselves into 40 S&W cases and 40 S&W cases love to wedge themselves into .45 acp cases. Conclusion: 40 S&W cases are evil!

I'm always getting .22 LR mixed in with my centerfire brass. I normally take a big plastic tool tray to the range to hold whatever junk I need for the day, and dump my empties into it randomly. When I get home, I take my stuff out of it and then dump the empties into the tumbler. I swear it doesn't matter if there wasn't anybody shooting a .22 within miles of me; I'll still end up with rimfire brass stuck inside my cases.

I know the feeling!

I’m a recovering brass hawk - ein Messingtafelhabichts - and remember well dumping the shop vac and finding rimfire, ants, lots of sand, cigarette butts, and all other manner of things mixed in with the centerfire brass. Screens worked for the sand, a bucket of soapy water worked for the ants and fleas, but the rimfire and butts just had to be picked out. Maybe one reason I don’t brass hawk anymore.

The 5.7x28 cases have a laquer coating on them.
The general consensus is that you don't want to remove that coating.
I simply wipe them down with a microfiber rag and some simple green.

My headache is when 380 brass somehow gets mixed in with my 9mm. My old eyes aren't good at visually picking them out. Then when I start reloading 9mm I will invariably place a 380 on the shell plate. When it gets to the resizing die there is no resistance so then I realize what I did and it interrupts my loading operation.

I'm a certified brass rat at my range. "They" claim if dry tumbling to put the largest cases in first and let them run a minute or two. Then add the next smallest case and so on. Me, I'm not willing to try it. I've had a 9mm stuck in a 40. I now sort all my brass with these:
