Make sure that I keep all items together. It's no fun when you just drove 30 miles to the range and found out you forgot to bring primers. Luckily I had a kindly gent sell me a box of primers from the skeet range we have there.

Never stick a dry patch on a cleaning jag down the barrel. You may never get it out. Had to pull the breech plug to get it out.

Also...BP guns work much better when you put powder in before the bullet. Nuff said..


Needless to say I just got back from a range session with my new TC Encore 209x50. The good news...the gun easily shoots 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards using 250gran TC Shockwave sabots with 2 50gr pellets of 777. I think I just found my Sambar Deer hunting load!

Anyone else her pull a range dufus with they BP guns?

Haven't had that kind of trouble yet (only had it out twice though....knocking on wood). I used a little too much spit on the patch between shots and couldn't get the gun to go off worth a damn once though

For the dry patch on the jag thing, the guy who taught me how to shoot my gun told me it was only a matter of time before I did that and got one stuck. He said the trick is to pour solvent or gun oil down the bore and let it soak a few minutes and it will come right out....or did you only have the patch stuck and not the whole ramrod?

Entire ramrod and patch stuck. I tried wedgin it between a crack in the shooting bench in an attempt to get a better grip (the ramrod) to pull it out, but this earned me some very strange looks, so I ended up pulling the breech plug and tapping it out.

I'm going to start trying a nylon bristle brush like the ones included for Glocks. That way I can scrub the barrel out and reverse the brush easily without removing the breech plug between shots. That and a bit of bore butter.

For stuck dry patches, pour some water (or oil) down the barrel. It lubes it and you may just be able to get it free.

Two things:
1. Get a worm. Get 2 better yet, and make sure they fit all of your rods.
2. Tiny spray bottle (like they use at barber shops).Fill it with soapy water, and toss it in your kit when you go to the range. Use it to wet patches.
Patches will be moist enough to go down the barrel with just soapy water.

I recently had to screw a roundball out of my Lyman GPR flintlock barrel after using too much grease in the bore after cleaning. :banghead:
It pooled up around the vent. Fired about 3 pans before I figured that one out.

Anyone else her pull a range dufus with they BP guns?

Let me tell you just how stupid I am. And I did it TWICE !!

I have a .50 ammo can that I carry all my BP junk around in. I have had it for probably 25 years. One day a couple years ago, I was out shooting BP and I had the ammo can sitting on the tailgate of my pickup open with some of my gear spread out on the tailgate. I was using the rear passenger side fender of my truck as a bench (like I always do). A breeze was blowing from left to right. I touched off a shot and saw a blinding flash off to my right. What the heck ? It seems that the the fire from the muzzle blast was blown by the wind and set off all the years of spilled powder in that ammo can. All my stuff was covered with black soot. Everything that was plastic was now melted.
Not long after that I decided to try some pyrodex pellets. I drove approx. 80 miles each way to buy a box of 50 grain pellets. I know you can see what's coming. Again, I sat the open box of pellets on the tailgate of my truck.............................................. One shot and the whole box of pellets was gone. I was so POed that I drove another 160 miles to get another box. Luckily I had a spray-in bed liner that was undamaged by the fire.

I've got a EZ Tip Extractor from TC coming in the mail from Ed's Contenders this week. That will help a bunch. I nearly went nuts unscrewing two forearm screws, punching the barrel/action pin and then unscrewing the tiny screw that holds the extractor and finally removing the extractor. Imagine trying to defy Murphy's law and not lose a part. All that just to get the breech plug out.

With the EZ tip extractor all I have to do is swing the extractor out of the way to gain access to the breech plug.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll have to remember them. I'll also have to remark my rod for 777 since the pellets are shorter than pyro.
