Read it in the new American Rifleman and then reread it because I still can't believe it.

In 2004 S&W is comming out with a 3" compensated barrel version of the X-frame .500 magnum. That's just plain insane. Anyone brave enough to shoot it? Would the muzzle flash be greater than a 50 cal BMG?

S&W will also be comming out with a 327 8-shot 2" sleeved barrel.

You've got to wonder what kind of ballistics are left when you cut the barrel back that much... getting 2,600 ft/lbs from an 8"ish barrel was impressive, but what can it really do with 5" less barrel? I mean, aside from make a muzzle flash you could roast a pig on?

I'd be more interested in seeing what .500 S&W could do from a 20" barrel? Might be a hell of a lever gun, and an X-frame weighs almost as much as some long arms anyway... :p

No, I think the "screams" would be the shooter's reaction after pulling the trigger on the thing. :D

I guess you could make a 4-shot Scandium/Titanium snubby on a smaller frame if you want to go all-out. EEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.

I was wondering when the first .500 Magnum X-frame subbie would show up. I didn't think it was going to be S&W, but rather some nutcase custom 'smith cooking up an "Alaska Special" sock gun.

I think in one of John Ross' columns he'd already written about Herb Behlin carrying his own, custom made 3" at the SHOT show last year... :uhoh:
I would think it'd take a BIIIGGG Man to want to pull the trigger on that on a regular basis as its probably still twice the power of a .44 magnum :what:

You strapping young guys enjoy 'em. I'll just woos out with my old 29...

Will it come with age old tiny little magna style grips?

Afterall, if it's a 3 inch barrel we are talking about a concealment rig here and that demands that you also have concealment style grips.

I assume that anyone who shoots .500 S&W is a hand loader so there is no reason to assume that they are limited to factory loads. It would be quite easy to devlop manageable but powerful loads. I think it has a very high "cool gun" quotient and would not mind having one personally.

I am not a huge revolver fan in general, but I wood buy one just to say I have it. What a great backwoods gun that wood be. Loaded with softpoints, it could be a real champ!

Superficially it seems like '' yeah - man ... want one!'' ..... practically speaking I think it is absurd!

I am trying to imagine a snub proportion revo fuelled on hot .454 Casull loads .. frankly, it would not interest even me .. a ''hand cannon'' and .454 devotee.

Up the horsepower another big notch - and again I return to the word ... ''absurd''!:p :D

Word is the 3" gun gives 300 FPS less velocity than 8 3/8". For this reason, it may kick LESS than the current version. I ran the numbers and shooting 450s at 1700 in the long barrel and 1400 in the shorty, recoil would be the same if the snub weighed 60 ounces (12 less than the 8 3/8" gun.)

I machined the underlug off a stock gun and threw away the comp; balance is 100% better and recoil only slightly higher. Weight is 63 ounces.

See it at http://www.john-ross.net/images/Cust500.jpg

I am in the middle of doing a 5 1/2" version, half lug as above, shroud shortened from the rear, barrel from the front, muzzle nut in front a la Dan Wesson.

Hope to show it to Herb and Bret in Vegas. Will be lobbying S&W heavily to produce 5" and 8 3/8" half-lug factory guns with no comps. Comps are useless on revolvers with heavy bullets. Do the math and you will see they reduce recoil maybe 1%-2% but are ugly, noisy, fill with lead, and make the gun an inch longer.

You CAN conceal carry a 5 1/2"-barreled X-frame (500) if you have an IWB holster made that positions the gun so that the entire cylinder is above the top of your pants (top of belt). This makes for comfortable 4:00 position and you can sit in a car no problem.

Have to be very careful with ammo choices to avoid too much penetration. Nylon bullets at 4000 maybe...?

Don't see the point in a barrel shorter than 4" on the .500 but I'll get a 3-incher and tell you guys about it. Comp is replaceable with a solid piece with a hole through it; I'd have preferred a regular 4" bbl.

I don't have a S&W with a 3 inch barrel but I have one with a 8 3/8 barrel. I also have a BFR in 500MAG that I had cut down to 5 1/4 inches and had it Mag-na-ported. The BFR kicks less than the S&W with the longer barrel. I have had several people shoot it and tell me the same thing. As John Ross stated I would not want a 500MAG with a barrel shorter than 5 inches either.

Mine too...;)

How about a .500 S&W Derringer?... :what:

500 derringer:what:
(by a weird coincidence this is post number 577 for me - - say, what were those .577 Nitro Express pistols called anyhow ;))

You have one potential buyer for a Handi 500.
Come to think of it, a 500 would make a slick drilling,,hmmm,, Baikal - can you take a look here?

I read that blurb in AR about the 3" and was wondering what kind of possible misprint it was. (Wonder if a Scandium model is in the works?)

You can CCW a Desert Eagle .50, too, if you have a vertical shoulder holster and the ability to shrug off snickering behind your back and "armchair commando" jokes. ;)

I think the most honest rationale for wanting an X-frame snubby is the same as George Mallory's for wanting to climb Everest... :)

does it come with its own first aid kit?i cant imagine why i would want to break another wrist as i did the day i shot a derringer chambered in some horrendous caliber..i will never laugh at another persons gun anymore.:D

I think a snubbie .500 is perfect.

Just build it so the sights are off by a foot or two at 15 feet, and load it with full power ammo. When confronted by a Darwin Candidate, just scream, drop the gun and run. He will pick it up, fire at you, miss, but still get his forehead split by the front sight.
