I'm listening to NPR last night and on comes an essay about hunting. Eek! I think.

So the commentator reports how he went hunting for the first time in New England with two friend who describe themselves as armed liberals. They want to live off nature's bounty and not eat crap from the market. They acquaint the dude with shotgun usage and then go hunting for grouse. They comment on how walking through nature is neat and even if you don't get anything it is fun.

Then he shoots a grouse and feels bad for a minute. However, the grouse is cooked up and he regards it as one of the best meals ever. He says that it is hypocritical to attack hunting if you buy meat at the store and next year, he wants to go out for moose.

I've heard NPR to some legitimate and balanced gun stories over the past couple of years. Much more than the major networks. I've heard them interview progun women authors and objectively talk about the NRA's radio ventures. I'm sure that they have antis on and they might be outrageous but the major networks never do prostuff as well.

Hey, once people actually shoot a damn gun, they usually realize they're not that scary. Sure, they go boom, but they're made to go boom at what you point them at.

I heard it. Actually, it was a pretty nice little story. He gets skunked his morning hunt, and manages to collect one that evening. He felt a little bittersweet at first, but then decided that it made sense: the meat was better for you than factory-farm meat, and tasted great. He ends saying that next year he's going to try to for a moose.

I listen to NPR a lot because they have the best radio news coverage. They also have outstanding music programs like "Blue Monday" here in Austin, American Roots, and also Prarie Home Companion and Car Talk. I really don't like their liberal bias though. It's really bad sometimes. I have to actively mentally filter the content, but I do that when I read or hear all news coverage. I have an English (and Geology) degree and critical thinking about a content's source is pretty natural for me. Reporters are just people too and are not experts in that which they cover.

I'm glad you heard a good story. I have heard several firearms' stories that I thought were good, but the majority are awful. Their Morning Edition and All Things Considered stories before the AWB sunset made me puke. They ran three stories in the week leading up to the ban, and I would not call them objective. I fired off several letters to them that week.
