Cheney Says Kerry a Threat to Gun Owners

By DAN NEPHIN, Associated Press Writer

PITTSBURGH - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) portrayed President Bush (news - web sites) and himself as champions of the Second Amendment — and Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) as a potential threat to gun owners — in a speech at the National Rifle Association's 133rd annual convention Saturday.

"John Kerry's approach to the Second Amendment has been to regulate, regulate and then regulate some more," Cheney said, citing votes against legislation that would protect gun makers from lawsuits and in favor of allowing federal authorities to randomly inspect gun dealers without notice.

Cheney lauded the NRA for its safety programs and said the best way to prevent gun crimes was to enforce existing laws. Federal prosecutions of crimes committed with guns increased 68 percent under President Bush, he told the crowd.

Bush "has shown you respect, earned your vote and appreciates your support," Cheney said.

Cheney spoke for about 25 minutes after he was greeted by a standing ovation punctuated by chants of "Four more years."

Cheney did not address the federal assault weapons ban, which expires in September, and which the NRA maintains has been ineffective.

Kerry, in a statement issued before Cheney's address, said "most voters don't know that (Bush and Cheney) are standing against major police organizations and breaking their promise to renew the assault weapons ban — which helps keep military-style assault weapons out of the hands of criminals and terrorists."

Earlier in the day, Tom Mauser, whose son, Daniel, was killed with an assault weapon in the Columbine High School killings five years ago, tried to enter the convention hall where the NRA was meeting, seeking to urge Cheney to support extending the assault weapons ban.

Mauser was turned away by a security guard as several conventioneers applauded. A couple of conventioneers yelled "Get a life" and "Vote for Bush."

Mauser, who marched three blocks to the convention hall literally in his son's shoes, said before the march that continuing the ban would be common sense.

"What is the useful purpose to these weapons? ... They are the weapons of gangs, drug lords and sick people." Mauser said. "It is a weapon of war and we don't want this war on our streets."

Mauser called the NRA "an organization with a Field-and-Stream-magazine membership but a Soldier-of-Fortune-magazine leadership."

The NRA expected up to 60,000 people at its weekend convention, dubbed "Freedom's Steel." The association, which endorsed Bush and Cheney in the 2000 election, will not endorse a candidate until the fall, spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said.

Yeah, grieving father who should be more concerned about the parents who raised the animals who killed his kid and the society they existed in than the object that killed him.

Liberal feel gooder . . . to be ignored.

What's the deal on the AWB and Bush - first he was in, Kerry says he's not and the Republican's keep quiet.

If that ban sunsets, Bush gets my vote.

If it in any way does not, I'm voting for a write in candidate.

My dog.

Be nice to hear the republicans get on board with the sunset. Out loud.

I own an assault rifle...and Im not a "sick person"...

Naah...Bwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahah
:neener: :what: :neener: :what: :neener: :what:

"Cheney ... said the best way to prevent gun crimes was to enforce existing laws. Federal prosecutions of crimes committed with guns increased 68 percent under President Bush, he told the crowd."

Enforcing existing laws includes the AWB, Project Exile, felony convictions for "LEO-only" magazines & we're supposed to feel good about a 68% increase in these prosecutions?

Good thing this Administration's come out that the 2nd's an individual right, or I'd be worried.

This type rhetoric makes me un-fuzzy.

I think the whole issue of bush saying he would sign an exstension on the assault ban is a red herring. Tom Delay has publically stated its dead on arrival in the house, won't even hit the floor for a vote. I think the prezz is just playing both sides, he knows it will never hit his desk.

Thing is, they're talking out of both sides of their mouth hoping to fleece the sheep, while "standing on principle."

a 68% increase in prosecutions for innocuous items doesn't sound like more than lip service to our "individual rights," now does it? What was it? 600+ added feeral prosecutors Bush added to theh roles .... looks like they've made their mark, or well on it.

They're either rights, or they're not, but Ascrofts "individual rights" comment "within reasonable restrictions" fits right into the same double-speak. Now which is it? A right, or some semblance of their interpretation?

Sounds like a little bit pregnant to me.

Don't misconstrue - Kerry turns my stomach, but this double+ goodness being spouted by this Administration should set some ears a-perkin'.

I hope Bush really makes a pro-second amendment stand if he is re-elected. After all he is from Texas, I have never personaly met in any anti-gun people here in my life (maybe they are in the closet). After all Bush really has nothing to loose his second term.

" I hope Bush really makes a pro-second amendment stand if he is re-elected. After all he is from Texas, I have never personaly met in any anti-gun people here in my life (maybe they are in the closet). After all Bush really has nothing to loose his second term."

Your last is most telling.

Having dealt with the 'Pubs for the last many years, I always hear that they can't do anything in their first term because they must get re-elected, & then, they can't do anythig while lame-duck because they always have to set the stage for the next one in line .... "& who just repeats the same BS!

Totally disgusted that we can't get a single viable canidate to stand on principles, what the bill of rights stands for & a 'Pub-party that will actually stand behind these principles.

Every time it's you're screwed for now, but we'll fix it later - which never happens.

Yes, there's been some state-wide CCW reforms which I'm tickled, to some extent about, but show me one positive thing - other than lip-service - at the federal level that has extended our RKBA - just one.

Hmmm, OK I'll bite - I'm jet lagged from returning from the far-east yesterday.

while none of the above are perfect, one must agree that after approximately 70 years of increasing gun control they are refreshing trends moving in the right direction. Why stop now?

Cheney did not address the federal assault weapons ban

It figures

Cheney ... said the best way to prevent gun crimes was to enforce existing laws

Yup, no matter how absurd, rediculous and farout, the existing laws need to be enforced :barf:

Well, I'll get blasted for this, but ... my belief is that any candidate we could all agree was the best for RKBA would have zero chance of being elected President. The truth is that most Americans are not big Bill of Rights supporters ... they're just living their lives, and often in a fair degree of ignorance about what really makes this country tick.

So, giving most Americans a stark choice between freedom and something more akin to what they are used to would not be a winning election strategy at the Presidential level. OTOH, I believe most Americans are good, decent, intelligent people who can and will accept truth over time ... witness the spread of CCW, in spite of the shrill rhetoric from the left.

What I'm saying is that I agree with rich2u and others who say Bush took a political position on the so-called AWB, and that position is based upon realpolitik ... not as it appears at first blush.

Would I prefer less BS in my leadership? Sure. But we're consigned to living in the real world ... unless we want to become leftists and Democrats. ;)

Highland Ranger, more info please

Please give us your dog's position on some key issues.

Breed/color are not important. I'm only interested in the content of his character.

Alpo vs. Purina?

Red squirrels vs. gray squirrels?

Ducks vs. geese?

Pheasant vs. quail?

Couch vs. recliner?

Rolling in dead skunk vs. dead possum?

There is great dissatisfaction with all the available candidates on this board. Maybe your dog is a candidate we can all get behind.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I agree with you, Jeff, but how is it a lame duck can't stand on principles? Not like he's gonna get elected again, so why not come out & spout some pro-freedom rhetoric/set the stage for the next guy?

Seems the bill of rights is a list of some things that the guv would rather sweep under the rug as some red-headed step-child ....

Yellow lab

Alpo vs. Purina?
He's an independent (Iams)

Red squirrels vs. gray squirrels?
Definately gray, preferably fast enough to be a challenge and afterwards, he just eats them straight up.

Ducks vs. geese? Pheasant vs. quail?
No preference - if it flys, he wants it.

Couch vs. recliner?
Wherever I am, all 110 pounds of him right on me as much as possible.

Rolling in dead skunk vs. dead possum?
Possum.

He prefers big bore revolvers and loves the smell of hopps. As my father says, he's a good man that dog!

By the way, the whole AWB/Bush red herring discussion - I am sick of it.

If he believes as we do, stand and be counted. He's the president for cripes sake!

I have a sneaking suspicion that these politicians, and Hollywood folks and media are all cut from the same cloth. They are the privledged class, who will always have access to whatever they need, guns or otherwise.

Its just us unwashed masses that need to keep working, and paying our taxes and giving up our rights so they can go and do what's right for us.

It's really for our own good so we shouldn't complain . . . . .
