I am very skeptical about this link. However I felt it was worth sharing as the implications are scary.

BREAKING: NSA collecting gun ownership records...
by DaleNC

I just heard from a friend who had a frightening story to tell. Turns out he has a friend who works for the NSA. Apparently, the NSA has been getting the records of gun buyers from the FBI. I guess the program works like this...

Person enters gun shop,

Person files background check paperwork,

Gunshop sends background check info to government,

Government fun on the flip...

DaleNC's diary :: ::
So when the goverment gets the info, they have the phone number and other personal information and they do the background check.

All this information is sent to the NSA to be added to the database with phone records and other information you provided for the background check.

This program will allow the NSA to identify potential terrorists and to know what type of weapons they may have purchased through legal channels. Ultimately it doesn't matter if they use an alias because the NSA tracks phone numbers and addresses to find the terrorist patterns.

Attempts to get the FBI, DOJ or NSA to confirm this report have resulted in no comment due to the sensitive nature of this type of intelligence gathering program.

Fortunately, the NRA will likely have no problem with this new revelation because gun owners who are not planning on doing something wrong have nothing to fear.

I just heard from a friend...
Real reliable source there...

Does anyone seriously think that the .gov *really* deletes the information they get when you fill out a 4473? :uhoh:

They've been doing that nonsense to NFA owners for decades. Welcome to the party everyone else.

That story is utterly false. Even if they wanted to collect that information, they would have big holes since several states do their own background check independent of the NICS system

Further adding the NSA angle is just crap, it isn't the type of work the NSA does or is even remotely connected to. Even if this was going on, it wouldn't be the NSA doing it.

I'd say the real purpose of the alleged story is to stir up gun owners who might have been sympathetic to the NSA stories by making the issue a little more personal for them.

I think that most people who really do work for the NSA aren't going to admit it to anyone and very grudgingly to their wife. anybody else is just a wannabe in my opinion

Ah, the Daily Kos

Is that the same Daily Kos that, along with the DU, had multiple articles on how they had positive proof, (and we would all learn our lesson), that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld were going to reinstitute the draft right after the 2004 election?

Sorry, the Daily Kos is a pile-o-crap, pretty much as reliable as Free Republic for honest and unbiased points of view.

But I'm sure they would love to stampede gun owners into raising a ruckus over the NSA and the administration in general.

The latest round of data mining and tracking foreign originated or foreign destined calls hasn't disturbed many people.

Just keep throwing stuff against the wall. By 2008 something may stick and by early 2009 I bet Bush will be out of office.

Then we can all hear about how lucky we are to be ruled by Gore, Kerry, Clinton, Biden etc. and start columns about the new permanent AWB being passed.

data keeping

I don't know about the NSA, but it's a fact that various government agencies have had their wrists slapped in the past for keeping defacto registration data. It's inherent in the nature of a bureaucracy to try that sort of thing. It would be a surprise to me if once agency or another wasn’t trying to keep a data base. That’s why we have a bill of rights in the first place.

So when the goverment gets the info, they have the phone number and other personal information and they do the background check.

I can guarantee that of all of the pieces of information I submit to the FBI for a NICS check, a phone number is not one of them.

Also, the make and model of the gun is not submitted.

Even if they wanted to collect that information, they would have big holes since several states do their own background check independent of the NICS system

Our point of contact in CT for background checks is the state police/ depasrtment of public safety. They are supposed to not keep certain records, and they are notorious for keeping those records. After some of the horror stories I've heard, I'm pretty sure that they use those records as well.
No doubt they would be nice and share if someone asked....

Kos = Kook as spelled by "the democratic wing of the Democratic party" ie the Socialists and Commies.

Woohoo! They don't know about me since I showed my CCW and didn't do a background check when I bought my XD 45! Woohoo!

That story is about as bogus as could be - the first sentence shows it's made up.

If the NSA or any federal agency was going around asking for those records at state police agencies it would have leaked a long time ago...

I bought a new hunting rifle a year or so ago and it had been a while since I had bought a gun and I was amazed at the paper work and the phone call back ground check before I cound get the rifle. Recently I won a shot gun in a "big" turkey contest and the same paper work was filled out (Form 4473). In both cases the background check was by phone and to the best of my knowledge the gun type was not mentioned. However, the lady told me that she was required to keep the form "forever" and if she sold or otherwise disposed of the business she was still responsible for keep the records.
Point is, when that call is made it is a permanent record that a certain individual has bought a gun and I would bet my front seat in heaven against a back seat in hell that the information is indeed collected and preserved by several government groups, NICS, NSA included. :banghead:

You bought a gun since that was started then you are "in the file.":cuss:

No government employee should EVER be trusted. They are only another form of parasites that are worse than mosquitoes. I have worked with NSA and most are left wing kooks, (maybe communists) in my humbile opinion.

You might want to put your big paint brush down. The office where I work is full of gun nuts...er, firearms enthusiasts, including a couple of hardcore USPSA shooters. Many veterans. Several EBRs between us.

That story seems a bit fishy, but be that as it may, I've operated under the assumption that in some database somewhere exists an illegal record of every gun I've ever bought from a licensed dealer, at least since the early 1990s. Just as I've operated under the assumption that every call I've ever made could potentially have been bugged.

Kos= loon

Yay for knee-jerk reactions! So because one person who posts on a forum posts a tinfoil hat, the OWNER of the forum is to blame. Gee, I guess mods here are in trouble, if that's the case!

BTW, I suggest READING dailyKos sometimes. You'll find something surprising..there's an absence of blisninnies, and a LOT of pro-RKBA Dems...and a lot of people who say that while they hadn't seen the need for a gun before, they've now started training at a range and have a rifle/etc at home, due to the continued scary losses of civil liberties.

Quite a bit in common there, I think. Oh, yes, and the grabber idiots VERY quickly get taken down, there, with sound arguments as to why guns are a right and necessary.

Yep. He's to the left of Attila the Hun and Ghengiz Khan which makes him a Commie loon to many here. And the story just doesn't have the kind of supporting documentation that would give it credibility. But he's better on his facts than most bloggers and sometimes comes up with the truth faster than you'd expect, cf gun confiscation in New Orleans.

Could the NSA be going after NICS? If the Administration wanted it, certainly. The President has declared that "no law or act of Congress" can limit his power. It's strictly a matter of him deciding he wants to do it.

State records? There's a little more possibility for leaks, but depending on the State there may well already be procedures in place for sharing information with the Feds in cases of national security - the exception that swallows every rule.

So, unproven, quite possibly a false alarm, but worth investigating because it really is typical of the NeoConmen.

Please READ the first post. The forum posting declaring the "news" was made by a DailyKOS USER named "DaleNC". Not by Kos. People are free to post there. Sometimes they make sense, sometimes they're tinfoil hats, and they get told off by other users. It's how those forum things work, you know?

That would be like attributing your posts to the mods here.
