Obsessed with Guns?

I am obsessed with breathing. I enjoy collecting firearms, shooting firearms, reloading for my firearms, and discussing these activities with other, like-minded people of any race, creed, color or national origin. I also like computer games, and play them frequently, but I am not obsessed with them, either. I know grown men who collect huge numbers of baseball playing cards, and I do not call them obsessed, either.

I am obsessed with breathing.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means

Breathing preoccupies your mind excessively? Do you have asthma or are you in an iron lung of some sort?

I find it odd that the orignal poster thinks that owning a gun is somehow connected to worrying daily about the ATF, but I guess I've heard stranger things. (Included the guy above obsessed with breathing, which is something that most folks don't think much about. ;))

I enjoy shooting and hunting...this, by default, means I am concerned about maintaining my rights to do so.

Am I obsessed, perhaps so; in the same way that some are obsessed with talking on the cell phone all the time, running 10 miles a day, checking email constantly, blogging, gardening, or almost any other thing that can become important to someones daily life.

There's such a general negative public sentiment when your hobby involves firearms.

I happen to collect coins. I spend a bit of money on them, I find them fascinating. I own many, and I probably have at least one conversation a day about them, outside of the internet coin forum I frequent.

No one has ever wondered if I am "obsessed" with coins, those who comment at all simply remark that I am a numismatist.

Odd that when that same level of interest is devoted to firearms, I become a "gun nut".

The word "obsession" has become such a loaded word with highly judgemental/political overtones that it's use today is always suspicious.
True obsession is a mental problem. So if someone likes/enjoys something I hate, then if I say they are "obsessed" with that thing/activity I am suggesting they are also crazy. How clever. I suggest this guy be ignored, I don't know what he is fishing for but don't take the bait.

I'm the Original Poster.

I'm interested because I'm constantly being called by both my mother and father, obsessed about guns.

I only own three guns, well, the pistol is technically my dad's, and if you count the pellet gun a gun, that's four. I got a few pricey airsoft pieces (4), but that's about it.

I'm just sicked and tired of being called obsessed, and that they don't want me to talk about guns or the government. In fact, my mom threatened to sell off one of my guns if I so much as mentioned them to my relatives at the up-coming wedding.

I don't know why she cares so much, as far as I'm concerned they act like a bunch of immature little girls, and are next to pond scum. And I've seen the guy who's getting married 3x in my life.

Currently, my SKS has a 5 round replacement mag to comply with state hunting regulations, but that's violating 922r. I'm not putting a synthetic stock on it (to comply with 922r), and I doubt a wood block in the mag would suffice, as I could easily take it out. I'm not permanently altering the rifle, either. I figured I'd have a much more likly chance of meeting the DNR than the ATF. I shouldn't have to pick and choose which agency to comply with. They should make hunting exceptions.

I'm looking to see if there are others like me, or if I really have a problem. Yeah, it may have come off a bit harsh, but I wanted to get people in a frame of mind to put down what they really think.

Don't take it personally. Sometimes people do not understand others interests in certain things. However, it sounds like you might still be living under your parents roof and that may set a set of specific expectations. If you are not, than continue on with what makes you happy. I have lived with my girlfriend for the past seven years. At this point, every time I get another gun or book or some sort of gun related item, she just rolls here eyes (Believe me, I try to support my hobby as much as possible). She thinks I have an obsession. I think that I am just devoted to my interests. Good luck with your situation.

I've been called "obsessed" also

My folks are the same way, although not as extreme about it. My dad has been a long time gun rights and 2-A supporter, but he has accused me of being "obsessed" with guns. He think's that reloading 5000 rounds of 40 S&W or 2000 rounds of 357 magnum is "excessive". Whateva.:D I tell him that its fun and I enjoy it, so what's the problem? I'm usually always talking gun politics around the house, the idiocy of gun control, what I'm thinking in terms of my next purchase, ect. My dad say's I need to talk about something besides guns.:D My response: What's wrong with being passionate about something, i.e the gun hobby, the 2-A and gun rights? I don't see a problem here, I'm just very passionate about guns, the 2-A, shooting and reloading, simple as that.:D

Obsessed with Firearms

Am I obsessed with firearms, probably. I own a handgunholsters business so firearms are a part of my business. I have nothing but the highest respect for people who choose not to carry firearms or own firearms, that is their right and I respect that and leave them alone, however those same folks need to respect our right to carry firearms and defend ourselves and our loved ones and leave us alone for we are law abiding citizens and no danger to them.

They feel only Law Enforcement and the Military should carry firearms, which means they condone deadly force but leave deadly force and their own protection up to someone else, Professionals who can not possibly be everywhere at once.

We who carry also respect Law Enforcement and the Military but realize we might have to defend ourselves as they cannot be everywhere.

I also hunt and fish, but a day in the field enjoying the woods and fields and streams, even without firing a shot or getting anything is still a very enjoyable day. I respect Vegetarians that is also their right and I respect that, but anyone who eats meat and puts down hunting is just letting someone else do their killing for them.

I once was deer hunting with friends in a remote area. Each day we parted and hunted alone using a compass and map and all day we never saw each other until we met just before dusk back at camp. It snowed just before we left and we were lucky to get out of there. However a part of me did not want to go,,,if you have never felt the primitive spirit and love of the wild that resides in everyone one of us,,,you have missed something in life,,,I left a part of me back there still wandering in the woods.

I am also involved in social issues and I give to charities, could I be more well rounded, can I learn more from life,,,sure.

Yes, your mother is worried about you, or maybe you just talk too much and you're beating the subject to death. :)

My mother never really understood the men in the family and our gun collecting, hunting and trips to the range. We compromised. No guns handling or gun discussions in the living room with guests present. We stuck to subjects that everyone could participate in.

It seemed like a reasonable compromise, after all we didn't pass around oily power tools in the living room and spread the pieces on the coffee table for inspection. When the women started sharing the news (gossip) or discussing recipes we adjourned to the den or basement.

She compromised as well. For the past 15 years she would accompany my us on the 25-mile drive to the range up in the mountains and sit in the car and read while we shot for a couple of hours. She wore ear plugs and sat in the shade overlooking a beautiful little river valley. Then we'd drive into town and have let her pick the restaurant. She really enjoyed the trips.

I've got a lot more wrenches than I do guns. I've probably got a half dozen or more 1/2" open ends.

Does that make me obscessed with 1/2 " open end wrenches?

(Oh, by the way, a gun is just another tool.)

Yes I do... However, I also obsess on Running mileage every week, lifting weights, the war on terror, ice cream, and Kelloggs Pop Tarts, to name a few.

I own 5 guns ...6 laptops ...have built 4 desktops ...15 watches ...3 pocket watches. ...2 mini R/C helicopters ...6 video game systems.........

I guess I'm obsessed about a lot of different things.

Proudly YES to all the questions posed by the thread originator.

""Am I a moderator on a discussion forum dedicated to guns?""

I wonder, does Oleg have to pay the $200 tax for every moderator he owns?

A fact that alot of Anti-gunners fail to bring up......That FACT is: with so many American's "obsessed" with guns, any physical takeover by another country would be extremely difficult. Why do you think the spineless Terrorists use the tactics they do? Because they know they can't stand and fight toe-to-toe with the "obsessed" American citizens. Believe me, if we didnt have the 2nd amendment, they would have done things differently. I'm proud to be proficient (not obsessed) with guns. Don't kid yourself, many countries still think: "Behind every blade of grass........"
