Well, I was giving the snubbie the daily 200 dry-fires, and the trigger ... changed ... during the dry-diring session. Before, every time I pulled the trigger, it went clear to the back of the trigger guard, to the point where it scratched out two parallel marks on the frame. Now, the trigger seems to stop very slightly before it hits the back of the trigger guard (though it can still be pushed all the way back, this takes more effort than before and it feels kinda springy/crunchy/wrong when I do it). The hammer still drops normally and in all other respects the gun seems fine.

What happened? Is my 642 broken? Was it broken before? Any help appreciated.

I'd give S&W a call and tell them what happened. They have great customer service and will make it right.1-800-331-0852

Got my revolver back from S&W

They received it last week and I just got it back today.

Thye listed the problem as "STUDS - BROKEN." Anyone know what they mean by that? (I'm clueless as to the inner workings of a revolver)

They listed the repair as "REPLACE FRAME W/SAME S/N." So I suppose I got a whole new frame. The trigger sure feels different - much lighter and smoother than even when I got my 642 new. I'm starting to think that one was defective (all the 642s I tried out at gun stores had pretty decent triggers, too).

Not bad service IMO. :)

The "studs" are really axles for the pivoting parts such as the trigger, hammer, and other parts.

They are attached to the left side of the frame and are open at the right side when the side plate is off (so the revolver can be built, repaired, etc.). If the frame/stud attachment point fractures it is bad JuJu for the operation of the revolver!
