The shooting happened in the 6900 block of south Crandon, on the city's South Side.

The off-duty Chicago police officer was walking to his house in the 69-hundred block of South Crandon when two men approached him and police say they allegedly tried to rob him.

We are told that of the two offenders, the off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed one of them. He does not know whether or not he was able to actually hit the second offender. That second offender is still believed to be on the loose.

Police tell ABC7 News that based on the investigation so far, they believe the officer was acting to protect himself in this particular situation.

This is fantastic. Every single pro-2A person in Chicago should call their local precinct and ask, "What should I do if exactly the same situation happens to me?" Then call the mayor's office and their city councilperson.

You know, it would be nice if the rest of us had the option to defend ourselves.

There are some folks out there who think that only cops are responsible and cool-headed enough to safely carry concealed weapons. I have a few friends who are cops, and I don't see how they are more responsible than the rest of us. In general, they seem pretty average. Meanwhile, there are a number of professions where the level of responsibility goes above and beyond that of law enforcement.

For example, being an engineer or chemist signing off on FDA documentation. Should something goes bad wih the product, that person could be held criminally liable and end up in prison.

Or, how about a forklift operator. A moment's carelessness, and someone gets 5 feet of steel fork stuck through their gut, pinched between a wall and a 4 ton machine, or crushed under its wheels.

Or the surgeon who must make decisions on the fly, determining whether or not his patient lives or dies.

Let's not forget:

Firemen
Construction Workers
Airline Pilots
Lumberjacks
Cooks, Chefs, Lunchladies
Nurses
Engineers, of all sorts
Plumbers
Electricians
Truck Drivers
Mechanincs
And a slew of others...

In fact, if responsibility and level-headedness were the main criteria for who carries a gun, the most obvious people to be excluded would be:

Politicians
Actors

In otherwords, the people who are most responsible are all around us. The folks that make all the decisions and noise are generally so much worthless cr@p.

I just spent the weekend in a suburb of Chicago and felt positivly naked not being able to carry.

This is why off-duty cops should not be allowed to carry. Some poor unfortunate person asks for a handout and the gunman takes the law into his own hands. Just think of the poor mothers of these victims - their sons who were just about to turn their lives around ....

The cop should have tried talking with them, instead of escalating the situation with a gun.
