Off to Sin City, without a pistol

I'm always unarmed in Vegas but I know where and where not to be. My suggestion to you brother is to stay out of downtown if you can help it. When I was there a few years ago while in my car with a friend of mine, I saw a bunch of Rolling 60's crips standing on the sidewalk with their shirts off and guns in their belt. Somewhere to stay away from. You're also not even allowed to carry on the northside because its considered a danger zone, oddly enough so it wouldn't help you anyway.

Most anywhere on southside Vegas by Mandalay, MGM and the neighborhoods south of there are fine. Very nice neighborhoods and very decent people. ALso remember that you're a lot safer in Nevada than you would be in California where the criminals all know that the general population is unarmed. While I was in Arizona last week, a guy walking into the circle K out there gave me a dirty look while I was sitting in my rented car. It was kind of intense, but I think as a possible criminal and by the way I looked back at him that there was the possibility in his mind that I was legally carrying. Had that been California there could've been a major altercation because he would have already figured I was unarmed.

Lastly, its not the NBA all star weekend which took place a few months ago where they tore that town to shreds, so you should be fine senor. Take care out there.

Interesting conversation. I've lived here in Sin City since '99 and carry concealed every day. You can open carry here, but you might get arrested for "disturbing the peace" especially if one of the weenie Cali tourists wets their pants.

Reciprocity is being considered by the NV legislation right now, but the bill may have had a poison pill amendment attached. S.B. 237, if passed, will allow the state to examine reciprocity and would allow Nevada CCW permit holders to qualify by category as opposed to the current reg that requires qualification and separate listing of any firearm the permit holder wishes to carry. Rumor has it that the chairman of the Assembly Judiciary committee, Bernie Anderson, has attached an amendment that might actually require EVERY Nevadan to go through a mandatory firearm registration if they wish to carry a semiauto. If that's the case then reciprocity in Nevada is dead for another two years.

Check out SECTION 11 for more info.

Whats sad about that is its true. People in California are "weenie's" to be sure when it comes to this issue. They're only comfortable with gangbangers and police having all the guns and not the law abiding citizens. Go figure, thats why we're the communist state that we are. I hate it here.

It'd be nice to have a pistol, but I assure you, you'll be fine. Security in Vegas in all the major casinos is top notch. I NEVER fealt like I was under threat whilst I was in LV. Most of the time, you don't even have to go outside to go from casino to casino (at least from Luxor to Excalibur to whatever). There's underground passages EVERYWHERE. If you can't carry, I'd use this as an opportunity to hit the bars. (See Senator, you lack of reciprocity forces me to drink!) See some shows. I stayed out till 3 or 4 every night, walked around, everything was pretty safe.

casino carry is not illegal, neither is bar carry

In NV a casino can ask you to leave, if you refuse they can ask a police officer to kick you out.(& you might get trespass)
You can drink and carry as well, just do not go past the drunk driving limit.
I really enjoy that because I do not drink at all but like bars that have live music.

What I really don't like about my great state is that it seems that most gun owners here are not into activism and that there are no indoor ranges in my town.

& it takes at least an hour to get to the local range.

well, got back from Vegas yesterday afternoon and I gotta tell you I'm happy to be back in Kansas.

Ended up shacked up at the Imperial palace because everything was completely packed! there were 50,000 there for a retail convention and another 30,000 for and "industrial fittings" conference, according to a fella at the airport.

This was my first time to Vegas, and it was really pretty lousy. There are so many college age and elderly folks running around! I understand how the casinos are so huge now, they're funded by social security. All of the slot machines at Caesar's Palace were full with older folks every day I left the conferences for my hotel.

There was a lot less violent crime and pick pocket type stuff going on than I thought there would be. There was no shortage of prostitution and fellas who didn't speak a word of english handing out pornography and advertising for hookers. Saying "No, Thanks" didn't work as well as just shaking my head as I walked by. Dirty dirty city.

The only part that I would say was enjoyable was Margaritaville. Though the drinks are expensive, the cheeseburger was INCREDIBLE. That alone was worth the hour long wait to get in for dinner...but that's another thing, it takes over an hour to do anything in Vegas. Want to cross the street? That takes a few minutes while you wait for a signal. Want to walk the strip? Don't get behind anyone with a camera or you'll end up stopping every 10 feet while they take a picture of treasure island from a different angle.

The imperial palace was dreadful, the Caesar's Palace was decent, but I tell ya, after the first night I was thinking the place was overrated, and by the 4th night I would have rather been in any other town. Oh, and the strip smells like Los Angeles.

Never have I been so alone among so many people. No one is friendly in Vegas. No one. I was the only one holding the doors open for older folks and saying hello to the help at the casino's. I don't know how many times I got a shoulder rub on the sidewalk, or how many people let a door shut in front of me.

Give up your Midwestern hospitality and mentality when you head off the Vegas or you'll end up disappointed I guess. Everyone there was so out for themselves that they were totally clueless to everyone around them. Also, avoid the $1 margarita bar at Casino Royale, it's got $1 customers hovering around. I got the feeling more than once that this $1 beer may just cost me my wallet.

Felt the same way when the wife and I went to the Oregon Coast a few weeks ago. I hate being denied my God given right to protect my family and myself.

Other then that....... How was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

Vegas !!!!!!

First off I LOVE THAT TOWN .... Wife and I have been there about 16 or 17 times over the years. I have never seen that first bit of trouble. I did see some idiot try to collect on a bet without the ticket. He screamed once and then just disappeared without a trace. Darn good security. As far as carrying I just don't. I may slip a blackjack in my back pocket and my Emerson CQC7 is always with me. Other than that I say just play it safe and you should do ok. One thing I did do is have the wife toss her money in the jet engine when we get off the plane saves a lot of time and I don't have to listen to her say the machines are fixed......

Sorry you had such a bad time here. Please don't blame the natives on that though. You have to remember that pretty much everyne you ran into and complained about are tourists also. I try to avoid the Strip at all costs for those same reasons. Go a little farther from town and it is a much more friendly place. Heck I have invited other gun people to let me know when they are coming into town as I am always looking for someone to shoot with.

thanks for the invite woofers.

all in all, I'm starting to think it really wasn't all that terrible. I'm not into prostitution or hanging out indoors all the time, so I think that the value of Vegas was lost on me.

My next trip will be Alaska. I'm really looking forward to that one.

It depends on the the county issuing the permit. Washoe County (Reno) was running around 45 days and Clark County (Las Vegas) around 120 days when I got mine from Washoe County.

The new changes to the NV CCW law will go into effect on 10-01-2007.

NV will be coming up with a reciprocity list sometime next month. So, depending on which state gets listed you could legally CCW in NV with your state's CCW permit.
Non-resident NV permits will go from being good for 3 years to 5 years.
Revolvers will be a handgun class, qualify with one and you can carry any.

The Clark County handgun registeration was also changed.
Visitors to Clark County now only have to register their handguns with the LVMPD, if they will be staying in the county for more than 30 days.
Residents of Clark County now have 72 hours to register their handguns.

Guess that it proves that you need to plan your Las Vegas vacation in advance. Not only plan ahead, but book rooms and entertainment as early as possible.

I have stayed at the Imperial Palace a number of times over the last few years, and enjoyed every stay. A few words of warning though...if there is a slot tournament in progress, steer clear of the casino in the morning, the seniors get a bit testy (even of the staff going behind the velvet rope, almost beat one slot tech senseless, thought he was queue jumping). Another tip is to rise early for a quiet table in the coffee shop (pre 8:00 is best). People-watching is really best at the Venetian. The quietest rooms are in the East Wing (also cheapest), and steer clear of the East Tower unless you like the loading dock and Hawaiian Luau band.
