Oh, the humanity.......

It makes me sick to my stomach when I see things like that. Once I saw a beautiful military issue Colt hammerless that had been pimp-plated. Another one that gets my goat? Sporterized milsurps like 03's and nazi mausers. I get it that they were $10 in hardware stores, and some very talented 'smiths made nice hunting rifles out of many of them, but still....

My understanding is that a lot of WW2 bring backs were chrome or nickel plated by their ex-GI owners after the war. A custom of the time, but gross to us.

This...

After WWII most returning G.I.s weren't think about long term collectible value and there were any number of auto shops that offered chrome plating to "dress up" that Luger someone brought home from the war. My brother has a mint condition FN Model 1910/22 from the Netherlands contract that somebody nickel plated at some point in time. I told him it looks like a presentation piece and he got it for a fraction of what the gun would have gone for with it's original finish.

I guess i feel like if the GI that brought it back had it plated, then that's cool. His trophy to do as he wished. If done by someone else maybe not so cool. I dunno...

It was very likely was done by the guy who brought it back which makes it an interesting piece of history to me. If I was in the market for a luger I would buy it at that price. I would have even bought it for the original $1500 if there was a letter to go with it telling who brought it back and how they got it.

Life is too short to get stressed over what people do to THEIR possessions. I don't have a problem with the gun. It probably made it's former owner happy. I would have just walked away and forgot about it. If I were a rabid Luger collector I might have a different opinion but I'm not.

View attachment 796556 Saw this mess today in a pawn shop, an S-42 (Mauser) Luger that someone along the way had chrome plated.
The shop compounded it by charging quite a bit for a gun that had had all it’s collectibility removed.

Oh, my eyes! lol

Have some more bad news for you buddy. Over at BullMooseGuns, they have this um....beauty? Someone went all out on it. Prepare yourself for this 1903 Colt classic...remade. colt 1903.jpg colt 1903.jpg colt 1908.jpg colt 1903 2.jpg

I think the Luger looks great! Sure it sucks that someone messed with a classic like that but at least it isnt FDE cerakote
If I were still looking for a shooter-grade Luger, I would look twice at that gun. If it's got a good bore, matching numbers and nice clear markings, I'd offer 'em $750.
Worst they could do is say no and I'll keep lookin.......:)

Mauser Original Parabellum Pistol (they couldn't call it LUGER) made a few P'08s in a matte nickel finish. If you find one with all the accouterments in the box it will be closer to $2k

That ‘03 colt is an abomination. OMG kill it with fire.

But that P08, if numbers matching with good bore, would be a good addition to a war trophy collection. It’s a representative piece that shows how some vets viewed their prizes. Part of the history of the piece, and part of collecting in general. Nothing wrong with that.

I had, in 1961, a high school physics teacher who recounted his source of spending money post WWI. He set up a plating bath and would plate souvenir pistols and knives with silver. For $3.00. Payable in silver dollars. ;)

Now that sir is a travesty to both man and machine!

Methinks JMB would be doing high speed revolutions in his final resting place over that one!

This right here.

Dont let personal preference obscure what it is and what it represents.
