And for those who don't want to bother chasing the ingredients but might like to try this witches' brew, Cylinder & Slide's "Dunk-It" is red and smells sort of like auto tranny fluid ...

I think you may be onto to something with the sheep thing. After doing a little more research, I could also sell the lawn mower, as IIRC, Woodrow Wilson used a flock to keep the white house lawn trimmed during WWI. To hold costs down, we probably wouldn't do the "whole" sheep at one time BBQ, maybe just one leg at a time and then get a replacement sheep when we're on our last leg. :D Could you hold my beer while I float that idea past Mrs Scout. :neener: :D ;) :uhoh:

For everyone else who recommended buying Hoppes #9 or other commerical cleaners/lubes. I've probably got 8-10 bottles of various Hoppes (Regular #9, Benchrest, Semi-Auto, etc.), 6-8 bottles of CLP (I'm ex-Army) and probably another 4-6 bottles of other bore cleaners and lubes. I shoot mostly shotgun, cheapie .22's in a couple of cheapie plinking rifles and cast bullets in .32 Win Spec from a Winchester Model 94, so copperfouling isn't really an issue. I just wanted to try out Ed's Red in my own completely unscientific test. Figuring that if worst came to worst, I could take it to work and give it our maintenance guy and he could find a use for it. (We do metal can manufacturing.) Or give it away at my club, sure I'm out ~$20 bucks, but I might find something that works (maybe even is better) and is cheaper then the $6.99 I paid for my last bottle or Hoppes or the $5.99 I paid for CLP.

I read "Hatcher's Notebooks" and figured if it worked for him, then it's probably worth a test.

I think I've got a place or two locally to check on Lanolin.

hso, I was about to suggest WD-40 as a cleaner. When used in moderation it works quite well. I've used it for all my firearms, just make sure you wipe off any excess. I can usually find WD-40 for around $2 for a big can.

I've been using Ed's Red for years without the lanolin or acetone. Works just as well as Hoppe's #9 for me. Costs about $10 or so for a gallon, which lasts damn near forever. Takes about 10 minutes to mix.

YMMV,
Jeff

I know we use Stoddard in the machine shop. I've been wondering about it's applications in firearms. There's not much it won't take off metal with some work.

"For those who are interested, the instructions for ED'S RED and many other homemade gun products are at www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm"

Just wanted to say thanks for sharing:) That web sight has allot of really good information.

Hey, scout26,

Go back to the PharmaChick and ask her for two of the original ingredents that Ed Harris started from: sperm oil, and optionally 200 grams of lanolin.

For giggles you could throw in: Pratts Astral Oil.

The first two might get her to turn in her lisence which would be a benefit to the world.
