Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears
September, 1978.
Major flood hit my area.

At one point the river was going over the lock and dam. Lives were lost, homes and businesses, washed away.

A few days later I drove as close as I could to the lock and dam, I met up with a Sheriff and a Game and Fish Officer, "Gonna be a spell before things get normal, be a awhile 'fore we know what all damaged."

Sheriff and G&F, said to me "grab your gun lets take a walk , but betcha snakes gonna be about...rules and regs...your helping us".

I grabbed my 45ACP, and my 22lr pistol, and we set out. Parallel to the river we followed what was left of a trail...heard the strangest noise...Sheriff and G&F drew their wheelguns, I followed, we rounded the corner...

"I'll be...heard of 'em, never seen it ....now what we gonna do?"

We had run across Walking Catfish --darndest sight I'd ever seen. I piped up " what do you guys think about rounding these up and donating so we can feed the folks in the shelters...can we do that?. A call was made and since a state of emergency had been implemented, not sure if they'd survive going back into the river...the go ahead was given.

We made a quick trip to a bait shop close by and the owner loaned us his 22 pistol, gave us some ammo Ice chests, 2 wheeler, and the use of his truck. Plans made for some charity groups to pick up the fish, clean, take to shelters and cook them up.

So with two rimfire pistols we hunted walking catfish, dunno the proper method, but we did. Pop in the head with a 22lr, chunk in ice chest. Now some of these things were pretty big...15 # cat 'walking to another spot of water" for breathing purposes can get to be a handful in a hurry. Laugh if you dare...but you ever handled one on land? Big ugly whiskered thing out of his enviroment...can cop an attitude;)

Between the catfish, keeping the snakes at bay, two wheeling a full ice chest back to the truck, returning...we plum wore ourselves out.

Filled that truck up,literally. The charity people met us-astonished-but we did it. A good effort by all. A few days later we 3 invited to a shelter to join in the dinner...pulled at your heartstrings...but a good feeling.

Game and Fish officer turns to me with a quirkey grin and " By the way, you gotta license to hunt or fish...not rightly sure which applies?" Sheriff almost chokes with laughter as I pull out my "combo" license.

Would those be the asian fish (snake fish?) that just started showing up again on the east coast? Supposed to kill them (cut them in half) if you find one, they take over the environment and kill all the native fish.
Pretty nasty looking stuff. Didn't say if they was good eatin on the news though.

I believe the "walking" catfish and the snakeheads are two different species entirely.

If they were snakeheads you would have made a small fortune taking them to an Asian market. There is a good demand for those in restaraunts.

As for walking catfish..ack..If it's not a channel, flathead or blue I'm not eating it.

Good Shooting

Aw, Zorro, you old spoil-sport, you! :D I imagine a 15-pound catfish on the end of a poor little old frog-gig would be hard on the gig. And that many fish, you'd tire yourself out swinging the bat! Not to mention splattering mud all over the place.

:), Art

Knew a fella used to shoot gar with a 20 ga.

Not terribly sporting.

But fun in a red-neck olympics kinda way.

Since some pm-ed me. Let me clarify. Flood, fish gonna die, we felt the ethical ,sportsman thing to do. We used guns, quick and sportmanslike.

Big hard headed 'cats' heck no I didn't use a 22. Me 230grFMJ , G&F: 38 spl 158 gr LSWCHP, Sheriff: his .357 158 gr loads .

Shot placement important in anything, the first time that 22 bounced off that Big cat...I unholstered the Colt Combat Commander. [ my rule of thumb is my sig line]

Redlg155: You don't eat Yellow Cats?

Someehat related to the thread. I started feeding catfish in the creek on my family's ranch. By feeding you could get a good concentration then catch them for restocking the tanks.

Carp (Buffalo) started showing up to eat also. I discovered that you could scatter floatring catfish food. Wait for the carp to show up, then track them with a .22. When they surfaced for the food I shot them. Almost as much fun as shooting turtles.

as a side note. Carp bleed. Alot.

Just call me a redneck, but it sure was fun.

Fish Shoot

I've heard that a 44 with hollow points works well for carp too, if you hit them when their backs are out of the watter. Just watch out for ricochetes.

We (I've long since transplanted out o' there) have had the tue walking catfish in the Everglades. No idea as to eatin', but seeing a fish walking across a dry road is somehow disconcerting - very unusual. But not for them. They just haul it over to the next best thing.

Shot a gar once off a overlook thing - 20 gauge slug. Looked like one of those WWII scenes where a freighter takes a torpedo amidships. ;)

Thread title made me look. Though it would be about bowfishing. Fun stuff!

Grandad had a pond that had high mounds leftover from when he had it dug. He made the mistake of stocking with "Nile Perch" aka Blue Talapia. A word of advice don't ever repeat that mistake.

Anyway the Talapia would swim in groups just under the surface. Throw a little fish food, and shoot a .22 for about ten minutes.

Good wholesome fun!

Fish shooting

Around here, salmon fill up the creeks several times a year as they return from the sea to spawn. Fantastic thing to watch. The game wardens get a MAJOR bad atttitude about anyone shooting at or otherwise bothering them. No real point, anyway- they start to deteriorate when they hit fresh water and aren't worth eating unless caught real close to the creek mouth.
