OK: Gov. signs CCW reform

On June 9, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry (D) signed into law Senate
Bill 834. SB 834 makes several improvements and clarifications to
Oklahoma firearms law, including lowering the Right to Carry permit age
to 21, broadening Oklahoma's reciprocity statutes, and changes
designed to protect school firearms education programs.

The law goes into effect on July 1, 2003

This, along with Arizona's new recognition statute, makes it more likely that I will not need a Utah CFP. I would have needed a Utah CFP if I didn't live right across from Washington State, or within driving distance of Washington, because I need a permit that is recognized by Virginia.

My Oregon permit now covers me in Oklahoma and Arizona, as of the date these laws go into effect.

Ha! I just read the amendments, and this means that the Saturday noon bank robbery reenactments in Guthrie are now protected by state law.

Haven't seen them do that in awhile...I wonder if there will be any this summer.

Also, there is a new section regarding relief from entities other than the state trying to preempt the state law.

D. When a person’s rights pursuant to the protection of the preemption provisions of this section have been violated, the person shall have the right to bring a civil action against the persons, municipality, and political subdivision jointly and severally for injunctive relief or monetary damages or both.

I think the only way they could improve on this (besides not requiring a permit at all a la Vermont) would be to call it a concealed weapon permit so I could also carry large knives about my person.

I hadn't heard about this particular reform. Sounds like another small victory. Using the antis strategy of incrementally chipping away, we are slowly chipping away at the infringements on our rights.

I hadn't heard that. I'll look it up. I hope it's true, because we have the most messed up reciprocity provision you can imagine, which is why we we recognize only a few states, and since we don't recognize most states that knocks us out of being recognized in those states that demand reciprocity.

Our governor is a Democrat, but he's an Oklahoma Democrat. He was endorsed by our state Rifle Association (the Republican was endorsed by the NRA but ran a poor campaign.)

Now if Missouri's governor will just do the right thing (don't hold your breath) I'll be OK in most of the surrounding states.

Very interesting, if I am reading the changes right, any other state permit is now valid. I guess this means that a Florida ccw will now be accepted by OK. Very cool!!
