MyGreenGuns, that Gerber Ridge is a blatant copy of the Ed Halligan designed CRKT KISS - http://www.crkt.com/KISS. You an get either the Gerber or the CRKT on Amazon for the same price, but only CRKT has compensated Ed Halligan for his design.

MGG, It's a single ground blade frame lock where the edge that isn't ground sits flat against the frame when the blade is in the closed position. That negates the need for a fully enclosed handle. The entire concept is something Ed Halligan came up with. Gerber just tweaked the blade shape a little.
Unfortunately, I don't think Mr. Halligan was able to patent the concept. Hence, it's fair game like Michael Walker's Liner Lock, and Chris Reeve's Reeve Integral Lock - better known as the frame lock. It was just an observation.

Thanks for the info. I was curious, not offended.
The flat backed / flat faced blade was part of the appeal to me.
Its easier for me to sharpen one edge and keep my angle correct.

You're welcome. The chisel grinds are pretty easy to sharpen. I you like ease of sharpening you might want to look at knives with the Scandinavian or Scandi grind. The Scandi grind doesn't have a secondary bevel to form the edge. The primary grind goes all the way to the edge, so you just follow the grind on both sides.

My vote for EDC folder goes to Cold Steel Recon I.
I carry a tanto point, half-serrated. Eventually the pocket clip will quit grabbing so hard if you abuse it. At that point, you unscrew it, bend it back into place using 2 pairs of pliers, and remount the thing. Good to go for another couple years.
Great grip, under 4" so legal in most places, very useful, reasonably good at staying sharp, and you can still gut a pig with the thing if you need to.

How not to lose a knife.
Don't want to lose a knife, buy a nice custom knife for $250.00. I have three customs, scattered around the house. Not only do I know where they are, I know how they are positioned.
I have two production knives I carry. I can't tell you where in house they are for sure. I have to look for them, I have lost both of them and I have never lost a custom.

Check Big 5. They have some great knives a good prices. They have sales on CRKT knives quite often. And I have gotten some excellent deals on blades there. They had 4 models for sale this last week. Including the CRKT, Crawford / Kasper ' DRAGON '! This is an excellent close quarters combat S.D. knife. On sale $19.99! These have been made in small runs but are discontinued now. Grab one before they disappear. You won't regret it! 
A few months back I got myself a Buck 112 Ecolite that comes with an enduro belt pouch. Inexpensive, great blade, and very sturdy. My EDC is a Buck model 55 that fits in the change pocket of my jeans but is big enough to handle about 99% of my knife chores.
If your prone to losing knives you might want to consider some of the "quality" Chinese brands if your not anti Chinese buying. Sanrenmu, Bee& Enlan, Navy, Ganzo. Sanrunmu and Bee Enlan are actually quite popular. Anywhere from $5 to $30 for g10 handles, liner lock, back lock, etc.
They make very quality knives that are similar clones to popular knives. Only downside is the blade steels are mid grade if that's a downside to you (its not to me as I prefer mid grade steels anyways). Usually 440c and 8cr14mov is what the blade steels are made from.
I'm just really hard on knives so I can't afford to buy $40 knives all the time. I use my knives for everything. Not just cutting rope, cleaning my fingernails, opening card board boxes, and kitchen prep.

It's unusual to hear 440C called a "midgrade" steel. I thought it was rather top of the line in the 80's, and that only a handful of steels do anything significantly better (in some ways, worse in others), today. It is relatively slow and expensive to grind, which is one of the reasons it isn't used so much... same problem as the modern crop of wundersteels.
Many popular folding knives are made from "lower" grades of steel hardened to only low to mid-50's RC, and they work just fine. For instance, the Ed Halligan KISS mentioned in this thread is made of 420M equivalent, hardened to only 51-54RC. Solingen "Black Cat" german pocket knife is listed at 50-53RC. I'm guessing the Opinel in my pocket is somewhere in that neighborhood, as well. Basically, anything with a small enough blade where you could snap it, you can't get much benefit out of a super steel, anyway. I'm pretty impressed that a chinese knock-off folding knife under 20 bucks would use 440C to begin with.
FWIW, I often carry an Opinel. It has a pretty long 3 1/2 - 3 3/4 inch blade, yet it weighs only 1.3oz. The long thin blade is more useful to me than a 3" long, 1/8" thick prybar with steel liner and a dozen-odd screws that weighs 4+ oz, which seems to be the prototype of the modern folding knife. It doesn't weigh down a pocket, and it's about as bulky as a Bic lighter - just bulky enough where it won't easily fall out of a pocket while reclining. I used to pocket carry the equally light but much smaller-bladed mini Gerber LST, but I quit after losing two. The Opinel stays put.

Ok, thus far....
This lil guy sticks in the pocket like a cloth magnet !
The clip/carabiner/screwdriver on the back does fold in to the handle if you like it to.
I liked the idea of something about "bic lighter sized" clinging to the pocket better.
Not a miracle of craftsmanship, but it certainly has done its job so far.

If I were prone to 'misplacing' my knives I go with a belt pouch or neck knife.

When all else fails. Go to AG Russell web site. He now makes, or has made, a batch of pocket knives in "CHINA", blasphemous word, that work. I swore up and down for years I would never buy a cheap Chinese knife. My wife changed my opinion. Fit and finish on AG Russell is amazing. I have a new barlow lockback from him is everything I want in a folder. There is a lanyard hole through which I have run a latigo strip. Knife goes under belt hangs in pocket without touching pocket bottom. Lanyard strip stays out side of belt threaded through the tip of a white tail antler. Pull on antler tip and knife comes cleanly out of pocket and under belt. I have done everything I can think of to mess up the blade short of cutting wire, blade is still in good shape. I have CRKT, Buck, Spyderco, Kershaw, Old Schrade, Case, Cold steel, and Gerber. None works better for me than the Chinese AG Russell. These folders go from a fairly massive double blade sowbelly to a clod buster to my favorite a lockback barlow. For under a hundred you can get two sent to you.

A.G. should have gotten best import last year for one of his models and deserves more recognition for importing than he gets.
I carry Kershaw knives. Leeks, chives, onions, etc. Good clips, super fast opening, and FANTASTIC customer service! Sent them three knives, all ten years or older. They tuned up the opening mechanism and sharpened them like a scalpel. FOR FREE!

Kershaw 'Needs Work' has a short stout clip and a great utility design on both blade and grip. A great knife for work. Two years of farm duty on mine, never lost from my pocket.
Or something a little thinner is Kershaw's 'Leek'. Sleek, fast, and very sharp. Can't go wrong with either...easy on the wallet too.

I'm glad I found this thread. I'd just recently lost the Gerber Paraframe I'd been carrying for the last year, and while I liked it overall, I was not impressed with it's ability to hold an edge. Now I've got a new wish list started with all the great suggestions in here
P.S. As others have said, a Buck 110 in a leather pouch is a good option if you don't mind the weight. At least you'll easily notice when it's suddenly not there lol
