Police Look To Toughen BB-Gun Laws

Tuesday January 28, 2003 4:54pm Reporter: Diane Harrigan

Tulsa - BB-gun vandals strike again and Tulsa city leaders say enough is enough. Tougher laws could soon be on the books.

Vandals have targeted nearly five hundred windows since November, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. This uproar is catching the ear of the city council.

Less than 24 hours after workers installed a brand new glass at renovated Rudisill Library, vandals shot out another five.

Since November, 448 windows across Tulsa have been targeted by air rifle vandals, and it's not just in one part of the city. Brookside, 31st and Mingo, Third and Peoria, and all along 11th street are just some of the areas targeted.

Now, at the request of police, city leaders are proposing change.

"What we're trying to address is unacceptable conduct in whoever thinks this is a fun thing to be doing," says City Councilman Thomas Baker.

On the table is an ordinance to make it illegal to transport a loaded air rifle in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. Police believe the vandals fire their weapons as they drive by.

Unlike guns, you don't have to register to buy an air rifle. It could be a bb-gun or a pellet gun. What's supposed to be used for sport is being used to destroy property and even those who sell them are appalled.

"It's like any vandalism," says Eric Johnson, Assistant Manager at Second Hand Rose. "It's useless, it's harmful and no good reason for it."

It's costing local businesses. And, with a library being the latest target, the three-thousand dollar bill is expected to cost taxpayers.

"Some insurance company will cover it and that's going to mean higher rates for everybody, so yeah, everybody suffers when insurance rates go up," says Richard Parker, Assistant Director of the Tulsa City-County Library.

The City Council will take up the ordinance on Thursday. It would also make it illegal to shoot slingshots within city limits. Police say without the ordinance, right now they can really only go after the culprits if they catch them in the act.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why a city/county/state/country tries to solve a problem being caused by a handful of people that already breaking existing laws, by enacting more restrictions that do nothing but hinder everyone except the handful of people they are targeting.

When I was in grade school, we used to walk down the roads looking for coke bottles so we could turn them in for the refund. Every convenience store within walking distance used to sell packets of Daisy BB's for 5 cents. They even kept them on the candy aisle, right next to the candy cigarettes and bubblegun cigars.

We have now reached a point where it is a crime to have a BB gun in your vehicle. :(

and the east moves west............

Sounds like a little taste of NJ is coming to you folks in OK.

Fight it my friends. it is only the first step to further infrigements. Mark my words on that.

In NJ BB guns are registered just like a shotgun or pistol is in this state of mine. Want a BB pistol? You need a pistol permit. Want a BB rifle? You need an FID card and a $15 dollar backound check through NICS.

Stop the madness early before the snow ball effect starts. We can not POSSESS slingshots without it being a crime in the fourth degree, $10,000 fine max and up to 18 months in jail.

See what I mean?:fire:

If leftists understood anything about cause and effect, they'd know better than to suppose punishing everyone affects law breakers. Their goal is punishment, not crime prevention, crime solving, or criminal control.

My city requires a permit from the Chief to fire an air gun in your home. If they insist on these laws, maybe we should make them spend the time to enforce them.

Does OK have a CCW law? If so, then it would be illegal to carry a loaded red ryder in your car but ok to carry a loaded .50 cal Desert Eagle? :D :D :D
I follow the logic.... I think.... maybe

Shield me, protect me, provide for me, oh great political leaders!
For I am a dumb, helpless, mindless sheeple....

Well they nabbed the BB Gun Desperado, last night...Seems that some of the store owners have been taking turns staking out the area. One of the stake out cars spoted the idiot driving by, sticking his air gun out the window, pop pop, then drove on.
They called police on cell phone and continued to follow the car. He nailed a few more windows before the cops stopped him.
Turned out to be a 55 year old "Child" with an attitude.

I wonder if they'll be able to pin all the windows on him?

He better have deep pockets.

And the "logical" reaction will be to continue apace with regulations which punish all the responsible owners/users of BB guns.

When I was growing up, any such infractions got reported to the father of the delinquent; thereafter followed a trip to the woodshed [yes, we actually had those] and forteiture of the misused tool, sometimes permanently.

That meant the next step in responsibility, a single-shot .22LR, would not be forthcoming.

Oh, the shame! And subsequent ridicule from peers...

You forgot to mention he is also an ex-con.

Watts has an Oklahoma prison record. In 1994 and 1995, he received one- and three-year prison terms for separate Tulsa County convictions of stealing merchandise from a retailer.

If it didn't make me angry I would find the whole thing funny. The police didn't catch this guy, citizens did. What if the police did stop him? They were looking for teenagers. I bet they would have taken air-guns from teens but not a 55yr old man.

My business was one of the 400 incidents. I don't if this guy is responsible for all of them, but our front door was shattered by a projectile. I never did find the bb or bearing.
