I sent my form 4/trust to the ATF the third week of February...this is getting kind of ridiculous...

I did call several months ago, and was told that it's "in the cue"...

I've been watching NFAtracker, and I get that it can take a while...this is utterly crazy.

The price we pay as law abiding citizens I suppose...

LOL...I honestly do not remember who the examiner is! The nice lady on the other end of the phone helped me through everything (it's my first NFA weapon, so that might be part of it) and I frankly forgot to jot it down.

Is there a point where I call and say..."Ok, what's the deal?" I know they're busy, and I know it takes as long as it takes...but Jiminy Crickets!

Call them and ask, they get paid for it. Once your pending 3 months +-.

Well, that makes me feel a little bit better...eight months? My word...

I think it's time for another call back regardless.

A buddy of mine went through this. He's active military, and even his paperwork took FOREVER.

My first Form 4 took over six months, but that was a long time ago. I've had it done in as little as 3 months and one took over 11 months. All transfers to an individual, not a trust.

I just turned in a Form 1 so I hope it doesn't take a long time, I'd like to finish it before the year is out.

(it's my first NFA weapon, so that might be part of it)
..
Were these first time transfers?
I've never heard anything about a longer wait for the first time around. You can basically throw a dart at the board and that's a good guess of the number of weeks or even months you might expect to wait.

Some people get one examiner's approval in a matter of weeks, others have the same examiner take several months; same type form, same type ownership, etc.

Some people have one form 4 take _______ number of weeks/months, and the very next F4 takes double or half that amount of time.

There's no knowing this stuff.

Thanks guys for the replies...

It does seem a little onerous and a bit ridiculous. Where I think a majority of us live, a trust is the only option. No chief LEO is going to sign off on a political hot potato like an NFA weapon, even if it is to a law abiding citizen...not at least in my area of the world.

Not that the traditional route is any faster...it just seems like there's got to be a better way. There's nothing to examine...the blocks are filled in, the paperwork spells out clearly that the trust doesn't own the weapon yet, it's signed by all parties and notorized. Bam.

In the six months I sent it in, I could have taught an illiterate how to read AND how to use a stamp...

I will give them credit for this: The government knows how to cash a check...that's for DANG sure.

Hah! They waited 8 months on my form 4 before sending it back requesting better fingerprints. I resubmitted with five unique sets taken by three different places plus the originals (as well as a letter from local LEO fingerprint taker and an explanatory cover letter) and it still took another two months.

I'd call and ask what's up. Generally, any longer than 6 months, there might be a problem with your application.

Were these first time transfers?

For me, yes it was.

Dudash was my examiner for that one (actually it was two stamps - Form 1s).
Ann Feltner is now currently assigned to my state per ATF's new procedure.

OP, mine went in in early February and I just got it back...there was a minor delay that was entirely my fault, though...I didn't include a Schedule A with my Trust-type application because I didn't have any previous NFA items and thus didn't think they needed to see what else I owned. My FFL received a letter in June telling them to have me send the Schedule A, but they didn't contact me...so it waited till, on chance, I called them to ask about it. Luckily it was within the 30 day period given before I had to start over and the very kind and courteous examiner (contacted by email) allowed me to submit it via scanned PDF file....and we got the accepted letter and stamp 3 days after that.

That's good info....I've gone over my paperwork a few times to be sure...or to anticipate an issue, but I haven't discovered any. I think it's time to make another call.

I wonder if they will eventually come up with some sort of online status check through atf.gov website. I don't know how many ladies they have answering the phone, but when checking the status myself, I've asked a couple of them, "Do you get a lot of calls like this", and was told, "All day long".

Gee whiz...the law and the process are the same stinking age for crying out loud! So are the instruments with which we apply.

Yea, there's a better way...all right. I couldn't invent a more screwed up way of doing it...and I'm pretty good at screwing stuff up!:D

I really am curious about the number of operators that they have answering that line, who just sit there and look up status inquiries all day long.

Just as we all know the first and last name of each of the examiners, and we even know how slow/fast they operate, maybe nfaTracker can get a count on the number of gals answering the phone. :D

The bureau could save a few salaries worth of money by digitizing/computerizing/automating the information so that we could access it through the web, an automated phone system, or something like that. Surely they're thinking about it.

times have taken longer and longer. All on a NFA Trust, 1st one- took two and a half months -done 3yrs ago, last one the 7th took 4months 10days put my hands on it in July 2011. Patience is a virtue but I agree there must be something wrong with either your application or your examiner, 6 months is way too long(1 month is too long). good luck to you, what did you get BTW?
