Steel "London", brass square, or brass round triggerguard?

Anything better or worse, or is it just aesthetic?

Is it harder to keep the brass looking pretty, than the blue steel? Or just hit either one with anti-corrosion stuff when cleaning?

well for me it's just what looks 'best to your eye' - I prefer the round guard on the 51 but I like the square on the Dragoon. But that's me - fickle I guess!

Don't know I'm afraid as I haven't shot a gun with a square guard yet.

In answer to your brass cleaning question - over here we have a product called 'Brasso' which cleans brass so you can see your face in it. Do you have that in the States?

Yes. I was thinking about getting some for a brass-furnished muzzleloading rifle I have. It spent 20 years in a soft case in a closet. The steel is none the worse for it, but the brass is all dark and dull.

I kind of like it that way, but then again, I think the shiny brass could look good.

Hi Neil

I've got a 1866 replica winnie yellow boy my Dad bought me when I was 14. I keep that in the loft displayed with his medals from Burma in WWII (he sadly passed away a few years ago) but I use Brasso on that from time to time and it works a treat! ... I also use it on the trigger guard of my Navy 36

The one I just bought

is the "standard" Navy model with dragoon like trigger guard and full octagonal barrel. I like it. Its really just a matter of taste.

My Walker has the same trigger of course and it doesn't hit me during recoil at all - the thing is so heavy that recoil is negligible even with 60 grain charges of Pyrodex.

I'm not expecting my .36 caliber to recoil either. So I don't see that as an issue.

This is mostly a conern with the older Ruger blackhawk models in 44 mag which of course, do recoil and some find that the square back trigger guard smacks their middle finger.

I have a consecutively numbered set of Colt Signature Series 1851s with the London-style silver plated trigger gards. They are nice looking. Now, all I need is the money to put a pair of Hickock Eagle grips on them.

The square doesn't catch your middle finger or off-hand fingers, does it?

No, mine doesn't atleast. It does seem to make the grip feel a little "tighter" but no big deal. I have a Colt 1861 and find no real difference in the grip between the two just because of the squareback triggerguard.
As far as why I got mine; aesthetics. And, to be "different."
