OLD 45 & auto slide lock?

My brother was given an OLD colt 45. The serial number on the pistol is 23,337. This would indicate a 1913 mfg date. The pistol says Model C on it. When we fired the pistol the slide did not lock back after the last round.

My question is this : Is the 1913 full size model C colt 45 semi auto pistol supposed to lock back after the last round or was this feature added later?
 
The C means that it's a commercial pistol...not military issue.

Yes. It's supposed to lock after the last round. The magazine spring is the likely culprit. The next thing to look at is the shelf on the slidestop that contacts the magazine follower shelf to see if it's broken off.

I'd sure like to see a pic of that if you ever get around to it...I'm sure it could tell some tales if it could only talk.
