My friend Bob found me one more old magazine this week which seemed worth a little extra showcasing.

This issue of Shooting Times would have hit the stands right around my 11th birthday, when I was in the 5th Grade and a newly-minted Boy Scout. I can't comment on other BSA troops, but guns were a major topic of conversations (second only to girls) in Sequoia Council Troop 32, particularly .22 rimfires. The T/C Contender was relatively new then, and I recall another member from my patrol bringing the latest Thompson Center catalog to a weekly meeting.

Here are the initial pages from many lead articles in this issue, in no particular order. Before polymer and stainless steel took over, this was the kind of content that caused the typical US shooter's pulse to quicken.

BTW, these are just excerpts to avoid offending the lords of copyright -- if you want to read entire articles, see your local public library:

Note that the Security Six is brand new, and that Nonte's article is about hunting feral pigs with a reproduction Walker Colt, which musta been exciting with that loading lever frequently coming loose under recoil and jamming the cylinder!

Oh and don't do this kind of stuff to your Luger today unless you like throwing away good money for nothing.

I had forgotten that back in the day, the small sidebar advertisements were worth giving your close attention, often being from the major players of the time. Here's an pasteup (sorry, I can't figure out how to make this a hi-rez link) of most of the ones from this issue.

You could choose from Mustang, Hertett or Franzite aftermarket handgun grips in 1971 -- Pachmayr was apparently just doing recoil pads as of this date. Remember the Hutson Handgunner pistol scope? Or the Pak-Tool portable reloading press?

The early 1970s were about more than just paisley shirts and bell bottom jeans.
